I grew up in a fairly Eastern European community so the only Sashas I know are all male so it always looks weird to me as a girl's name. I guess it works as a stand alone name but I prefer it is a nn for the Alex names. I do think it will get more popular with it being Obama's daughter's name and thus getting more mainstream attention.

When I went to Russia I met heaps of girls named Sasha. I think it was short for Alexandra. I think it's unisex.

Yeah it's used as a nn for the Alex- names, Alexander is just way more common where I am (I think it's the most popular name in Russia)so its odd to see it on a girl.
