I'm not particularly fond of Jacob myself, but I do like Jake. I definitely think it could stand alone. In fact, I knew someone named Jake (full name) and I thought it was perfectly fine.

I dislike Jacob as well. I think it's ugly. Jake is not something I would use but it's much better than Jacob. And if Jack can stand alone, why can't Jake? it's not cutesy like Alfie or something like that.

I think it could. People will probably expect that the kid's name is Jacob though. Like I have a friend whose name is Maggie and people always assume it's short for something even though it isn't.

But that's probably because it's my dog's name. :[ So for me, on a person at all it would seem a little awkward, and completely absurd as a stand alone name. But, I am quite obviously biased.
