If I ran across a non-Russian family in the US who had named their son Alexander and called him Sasha, I would find it a bit.. pretentious? Far-fetched? Implausible? It would seem like the parents either wanted to use Alexander but were hung up over it's popularity, or wanted to use Sasha but were hung up over how popular it is for girls.
For me, Sasha has become less of a "is this a boy's or girl's name?" and has become mostly a cat's name. I can't count the number of cats, male and female, I've met or heard of named Sasha. I even named a cat Sasha myself.
