I used to hate it but it's grown on me recently although I think it's a bit dated, maybe because I know a few in their 20s. It was my great-grandfather's name as well. We also knew a family who had three red-haired children and named their baby son Russell because it means red but of course, he had brown hair! Russ is ok as a nickname but I prefer Ross.I don't think of it as being a surname and the connection with dogs had never occurred to me!
