Do celebrities set our naming trends?
I've been wondering this for a while, because on the rare occasion that a celebrity names their child something normal (not Dweezil, Moxie, Kal-el, etc.), it seems to gain more and more popularity among us.Take, for example, the name Deacon. Before Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon named their son this in October of 2003, the name didn't rank on the popularity lists and wasn't even part of the database here. Now, almost two years later, it has ranked 891st and has been added to the database due to an increase in popularity.Or how about Ava, or Lola, or Roman, or Rowan, or Oliver? I realize that some of these names are classics or perhaps have already been on people's favorites lists for years, but each time a new celebrity baby is named, that particular name makes a huge surge up the popularity charts.Anyone else notice this, or is it just me?

I think a lot of the naming trend is due to how babyname books make such a big deal out of what celebrities named their children. And you never know how much celebrities too are following the trend.

I didn't realize that Ryan and Reese had a son named Deacon. I like it, but my family is southern baptist and way back when, Deacon, Usher, Preacher and the like, were not unheard of or uncommon.I like Lola, but I'd never use it. I love Roman, but I've loved it since I watched Days of Our Lives (an American daytime soap opera). It actually makes me sad when celebs popularize a great name that was an underused classic because I don't want my kids to be one of 1000 Ava's, Hazel's (I was heartbroken over Julia Roberts' little Hazel), etc."No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

If I hear another "Ava Grace" or "Ava Elizabeth" I think I will tear my hair out. People can be such sheep! But that's just human nature I suppose ... We mimic each other constantly, and we mimic celebrities even more. Their haircuts, their fashion sense, and their naming tastes as well. Some other names I think were accelerated by celebrities:Lily / Lila
Stella
Mia / Maya
Honey (So many British Z-listers have used this...)With boys, I suspect there's a couple of pint-sized Griffin's running about LA, since that's another name that's suddenly soared and that seems to be on *everyone's* list._____________________________________________________________________Elinor"Yeehaw!" is not a foreign policy!

They don't have any effect on my name list or what names I like. But you are right, they do popularise the names.

It's true, sometimes sadly so!
It's sometimes a good thing but sometimes a bad thing!

I have noticed a definite jump in Maddox's and Paris's lately. While Oliver is one of my favorite names, it is for a completely different reason. I recently read Oliver Twist for the first time and as I read the book, the name Oliver grew on me.lol I really didnt like it before the book, now I love it!

I think Ava has gone up in popularity since there are so many Avas in the celebrity world. :)

Celebrities have a knack for finding unique names and have the power and money to pull them off. Some are lovely and it's great that other people are picking them up but some are just laughable

I agree with you, when regular Joe's pick those wacky names, it is just laughable!

You're not alone on this. I think Maddox(Angelina Jolie's son) and Ashton(Kutcher) have become popular names because of well known celebrities. I wonder if parents decided to name their daughters Paris in honour of Paris Hilton? lol
