The main reason that Wallis could not become Queen was because of the divorce. The monarch is head of the Church of England and at the time (apparently up until 2002) the Church of England did not agree with divorce and did not let divorcees re-marry in church so the head of the Church couldn't marry a divorcee. I definitely think it's a good thing that times have changed. Regarding Charles and Camilla, there is still a lot of bad feeling amongst some people about their marriage, especially as they both comitted adultury throughout their marriages (another sin) but the decision has been made now. As far as Wallis being American is concerned, I'm sure this would not have been a barrier against her marrying Edward, if she had been considered otherwise "suitable." As far as I know, the only real barrier to being part of the monarchy (or Prime Minister) is being Catholic.
