Edward's one of my favorite male names. I like old names so I'm not worried about Edward's "aging" factor. Truthfully, I don't really want to use a nn with it to youthen it up either. If you don't like any of its nns, then do what I would do and just call him Edward all the time. I have a cousin who goes by Joseph and nothing but, so it's doable.
John Edward is blah and makes me think of the politician besides, and James Edward is even more boring. If you're going to use Edward as a mn, match it up with something more youthful like Logan or Dylan or Brandon.
