Comfort
I came across Comfort in a novel. It's the name of a girl from a really religious Christian family. I'm really digging it - as more than just a gp. I like the meaning of the word and even enjoy its Puritan associations. WDYT? Is it usable?

Don't like it...Sorry, but I just can't see it as a name.

LOVE it...Is the book possibly Each Little Bird That Sings, because that book was pretty great with Comfort and her sister Merry.

Sorry, that's not the book. I am pleased to learn that Comfort is so well used in literature, though.

She should wear buckled shoes and tack a "Goodwife" at the front of her name.:/

I very much like the idea of Goodwife in front of a woman's namewhen she's a wife, that is. And am on record here saying so. Also, there are certain styles of buckled shoes that are quite stylish.Comfort is no different than Prudence or Patience.

It makes me think of the fabric softener.

I met a Comfort once. She was working at the Warehouse (NZ version of...Walmart, I guess). It struck me as quite odd, mostly because it reminds me of the bottle of fabric softener we have in our laundry. Not bad though. I wouldn't use it, but I think it's usable, probably more as a MN though, as others have noted, 'come' is not the best nn for a girl.

So you met a Comfort. Did she say if anyone gave her a hard time about her name?

No. I didn't really speak to her past 'hi', so 'met' is probably a bit strong lol. I just noticed her name on her name badge.

There was a girl called Comfort on 'So you think you can Dance'At the time I thought it was a pretty awkward name and thought it was a type of 'virtue' name (though I'm not at all sure it is).
I did suit the girl on the show, and she was an excellent dancer so it made me feel a bit more positive about the name.Having said all that I wouldn't ever dream of using it because, put bluntly, it just sounds a little silly to me. In a world of wonderful names, I don't think a word to describe a nice soft couch is good enough for a girl.

Did other people on the show make fun of her name or otherwise comment on it?

DittoWhen I first heard her name on the show, I thought it was one of the most ridiculous names I've ever heard. I got used to hearing it because I watched the show, so it didn't bother me as much anymore. But I still think it's a ridiculous name.

The nn would be "Come"....not cool IMO......Sorry but Comfort is not my cuppa at all.Come is a terrible nickname for a girl. I just can't imagine the endless teasing someone with this name would recieve.
It's awful sorry.

It would not! The nn would be Comfy, which is cute :p

COMFY!! ha ha......sorry but that's so funny

ExactlyI wouldn't use a nn, but in the novel the girl's family calls her Comfy. I guess it is kinda cute.

I love it, and yes it's usable [m]If the other virtue/idea names similar to it can be used so can it I mean it's not really negative is it? It has a nice meaning like most virtues/idea names.ETA: to clarify I only like it as a MN

I second it. Southern Comfort would be a lovely name!

I apologize.I didn't realize it would go this far - it was more of a joke. In fact this is the first time I've replied to anything on this board in this manner in quite some time.

Okay, let's all just calm downIt's fall, we've got holidays coming up, some of us will have mid-terms soon and everyone is stressed out. But that's no reason for people to start taking bites out of people for know apparent reason.I'm not just taking about you, it's everyone. The air has been more than usually jumpy and unfriendly around here. Maybe we all just need some hot coco and a good long talk, maybe we all need a kick in the teath, maybe some of us need option A and others need option B. Whatever we need, let's us try and sort ourselves out so we can get back to being a happy family. Can we do that?

YeahNo need for you guys to be bratty either

Very rude.I think Comfort is no worse than other names like Liberty, Hope, Faith etc.

*sigh* take your unprovoked attitude somewhere else, please.

I personally wouldn't like to be named after a brand of whiskey...I think Comfort would be fine in the mn spot, but it's gonna turn a lot of heads as the first name.

I prefer it as a MN myself as well
