Niko / Nico are forms of Nicholas. Since they are not technically a nickname, but rather the name a culture uses instead of Nicholas, I see it as standing on it's own. Whether or not I like it, I'm unsure. I'll say I'm neutral.
As far as which spelling, I'd go by which culture I'd like to honor more. Finnish (Niko) or Italian/Dutch (Nico). If a name I like is from a country of my origin, I like it even more. Since I have no family ties, I'd say my favorite goalie in college (hockey) was Finnish. Not to mention I am bias on liking K's instead of C (my name is Kristina, not Christina).
