HelpEvangeline Pronunciation?
Our beautiful and long awaited daughter Evangeline Charlotte was born almost 5 months ago. When I introduce her, I say "This is Evangeline", pronouncing her name Eh-van-jeh-leen". People think her name is Avangeline, with an Ah sound. So lately I have been emphasising the E, saying E-van-geh-leen (E like the letter E). What am I doing wrong? What is the correct pronunciation? Am I actually mispronouncing my own daughter's name? (gasp) Our boys have more common names (Alexander & Christopher), and though I've noticed slight regional variations in the pronunciation of Christopher, I've never met anyone who was confused by the pronunciation. Thanks, experts! (p.s. I was on here during my pregnancy last year, thanks so everyone for naming advice!)

The way you pronounced it is the one given on this site (eh-VAN-jeh-leen) and the only way I've ever pronounced it. ::shrugs::

I say e-VAN-je-leen, as Lily does. The beginning is certainly an E sound coming from my mouth.

Most people do not put emphasis on the first syllable of Evangeline. When they say it, they will sort of imagine it pronounced like Eev (first syl) but it will come out like Av. That is: they can't really tell the difference, or else they don't pronounce it. I say it in my head Eevangeline but out loud ahvangeline. *shrug* no biggie. Evie is still a natural thing to call her even for the people calling her avangeline. I hope this is an even slightly coherent reply. In sum: no worries, you are fine.

I pronounce it ee-VAN-je-leen with an ee sound. I also like it pronounced ee-VAN-je-line, but I guess I'm the only one who likes it pronounced that way.

I say eh-VAN-jeh-leen. People probably just don't know the name.
I'd never heard of it until the actress Evangeline Lilly. And she's the only person I've ever heard of with that name.
So unless people have heard of her, I'm not surprised they haven't heard the name before.

I would pronounce it 'ev-AN-jeh-leen', same as you. If people think it is Avangeline, well that's just stupid. They probably assume it's Ava+Angeline, especially with the popularity of Ava. I'm quite shocked they haven't heard of the name Evangeline.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. We are in the land of Sophia & Ava here, so people are generally confused by the name & ask me (at one son's school, at the park) how to spell it. I was familiar with the name prior but admit that I really got hooked on it after Nanny McPhee came out. Thanks for the compliments on the name & the sib set! We are done having children (sigh), but I would have loved to add a little Penelope, Vivienne, Theodore or Gregory to the mix, LOL.
