I plan on naming my second daughter Adelaide one day, and she'll probably go by Addie alot of the time, and her full name alot of the iem too. I also plan on calling her Addie May - my combo is Adelaide Lucy Aviva, and Aviva means spring, May is spring in the northern hemisphere (yes it's a stretch, and to be honest, I don't care that it is :) I can also see Ads creeping in, it's a naturual progression for me to shorten a name to the first syllable and add an s. She'll probably also get Lady and Ladybug, as well as a million other unrelated nn's.

I like it with Eleanor and Margaret. I love the name Eleanor but couldn't use it myself- I already know one, who mainly goes by Elly.

Definitely Della. I know it rhymes with the way-over-used Ella and Bella, but I think the 'd' brings it down a bit, gives it a sense of seriousness. I actually liked Della as a separate name before I liked Adelaide, but I think it's great as a nn for Adelaide.

ETA: I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Heidi. Not that I like it (I knew a particularly un-nice person with this name and she ruined the name for me), but it's one of the more traditional nns for Adelaide/Adelheid. Maybe a lot of you think that Heidi doesn't work for Adelaide because the right letters aren't there? (I'm just interested)

Ada

I like both Addie and Adele as nicknames for Adelaide. I would most likely go with Addie though. Ada is cute as well. Perhaps this appeals to you as well? I like it pronounced ADD-a, but AY-da is okay.

I'd go with Ada or Addie, preferably Ada. I always thought that was a pretty, simple name.

I'd probably use Lady. :P I also like Adele and Ada.

Addie is cute, too. Lady would be fun as a casual NN.

Adelaide is so beautiful that I would hate to cover it up with a nn, but I love the idea of using Addy/Addie more as pet name, not using it all the time. Both Adelaide and Addy are wonderful, though. I don't care for Adele much. It seems more like a name of it's own than a nn.

I had planned on calling my Adelaide "Della", but she ended up Adda. ADD-uh not AY-duh. Sometimes she was Lady, my little Ladybug. I'd even thought of Adelai, a name I'd seen in a name book once upon a time. These days she has decided she is Ada.

Adele is really contrived to me, I don't say it "uh-DELL-ade." I can't imagine ever calling an Adelaide "Adelle." I used to think I'd call one Della but that didn't make sense either. Whereas Addy is spunky, simple, cute, easy, and non-permanent. I'd call her Adelaide most of the time but probably Addy a lot.

I'd either use Addie or Adelaide with no nn. I hate Adele but if I used it I would spell it Adelle.
