Caillou
what are your thoughts on the name Caillou(kye-YOU)for a boy.I first heard this name from a children's show of the same name (main character's name)that airs in Canada.Caillou apparently means "stone" but it also can also mean "bald head" in French.

It's really weird. Doesn't sound like a real name to me.

I have heard of the show, and the mane does not sound at all French to me at all, as it was pronounced [kai'ju], whereas in French pronunciation it would be [kɛ'ju]. It is a nice name, however, regardless of its meaning (which you should consider to mean "stone" rather than "bald head" if giving it as a name).

I think the meaning of the word caillou in French is closer to English "pebble" than "stone". I have been told that in France itself most people interpret the cartoon character's name as being a nickname, sort of like the phrase "chip off the old block" in American English, and think the idea of using it as an actual given name is very odd. :)

I think it would work as a mn. I can't see it working as a fn.

When I look at it i can't say it and I get confused. I have dyslexic tendency and this name hurts my head with the i and the l's all in a row, plus I would say Kail-oo. The sound is okay though.

I rather like it (I'd pronounce it KYE-you). It sounds like I wouldn't if I'd ever seen the TV show lol.

I met someone in Texas who knew someone from Louisiana who had named their son that. He was still a child, but older than the TV show. They chose it because it's Cajun. It was pronounced "KYE-you," with the stress on the first syllable. I am pretty sure that's the Cajun pronunciation. Dunno how they say it in Canada. I don't like the pronunciation kye-YOU. It sounds like a dog howling to me. I think the name is okay when pronounced the way I heard it, although I find it to be a "character" name either way, kind of over-the-top.

I think I'd like it if it wasn't for the show. I'm sorry, but that child is so whiney and that voice...don't even get me started.

I watched that show when I was little. It airs in the U.S. too. Lol, I never knew it meant bald head, it's fitting though. I've rarely ever seen another bald four year old kid other than on that show. I don't really like the name. It's confusing to pronounce (unless you watched the show). It has an OK sound though.

Well, since I've never seen the show, I don't have any bad associations :)I think it's rather appealing. I was born and raised in deep East Texas until I was 16 so I love a lot of the French names. It has a good ol' Cajun feel to it for me :)

I used to watch that show out of utter boredom :PIt reminds me too much of Caribou for me to like it.

I love the way it looks.

I can't stand that show, and my dislike fuels a dislike for the name. It's too bad, because it's otherwise kind of appealing in sound to me. But ugh, Caillou. D:Array
