I love Max but only as a nickname for Maxwell. It seems too nicknamey and insubstantial to me to stand on its own, and I don't like Maximilian too much. I love Maxwell, nn Max. If I had ever had a second son, I would have seriously considered this name.
My sister commented once that Max is trendy and popular, but I have never met one, even a child. There were no little boys named Max in my children's school classes, so it never seemed too trendy to me.
