As for the spelling I prefer Allie, it looks more substantial, but I don't mind Ally either. I'd prn. Ali differentley and don't like the Ali G association.

I knew an Alexandra that went by Xan, which always sounded masculine to me. Xandra is ok, though.

Alex sounds stronger and Allie sounds softer. I suppose it depends on the personality of the person carrying the name.

I know an Alexandra who goes by Alix. I think it's unique without being too out there, ya know? She also goes by Andy on occasion.

I don't see what's wrong with using Alex on a girl, so many of the posters say it's too masculine. To me Chris, Alex and Jo(e) used as nicknames are fine.

Ali is horrible (reminding me of Ali G in da House ;)), Ally is 80s, but I love Allie.

Allie definitely gets my vote over Alex. Allie is such a sweet nickname, while Alex is all-boy imo and sounds so masculine.

I much prefer Allie to Alex. Alex is more masculine in my opinion. I also prefer the spelling Alli (it's just the one I'm more familiar with).

I prefer Lexie, Lexa, or Alexa over Allie or Alex as a nickname for Alexandra.

I prefer Allie, as it sounds a little more decisively feminine. I'd keep it spelled Allie.

Allie! Alex is so masculine, generic and dull. I've never understood why people use it for girls. It's so very manly to me.
