Re: Anthony?
It's the name of too many of my computer science lecturers for me to see it as anything but nerdy and geeky!Interestingly enough, I was reading about this name last night because my friend was round and her older brother is called Anthony. I have an old baby name book from 1980 (published in Britain) which is quite an interesting read because it remarks upon whether names were becoming popular, losing popularity etc at the time. It also has other random facts about a lot of the names. For Anthony it says:"The spelling Anthony appeared in the late sixteenth century and is commonly used in this country, although the h remains silent, unlike the pronunciation of this name in America"Is this true? How do Americans pronounce it? ANTH-o-nee?S xx

Yes, we say ANTH-o-nee, pronouncing the TH just like the beginning of the word "think". It was my father's middle name, and that was how he pronounced it. I'd forgotten that the British pronounce it with a hard T, until your post reminded me.
