Marian
What do you think of Marian (for a female)? I do like it, but I am not sure it is list-worthy (yet). I have also never met anyone named Marian, but it does have a sort of whimsical allure from its appearance in the Robin Hood tales. Also, do you prefer Marian or Marion? I think Marian is more feminine.I also have a cousin (female) named Marjan (pronounced mahr-ZHAAN). Sometimes it's spelled Marjane, like author Marjane Satrapi (I don't know if any of you managed to catch Persépolis--but I recommend it highly).

To me Marian and Marjan are male names and I can't see them on a girl (we don't do unisex names here). I like Marianne for a girl, though.

I like Marián for a boy but for a girl is pretty Marianna, Marion or Manon.

I like it a lot. I know two Marians. One is in her 70s and the other is 22.

Love!I prefer the spelling Marion in honor of my grandma, although she did hate the way her name was spelled so I have considered using Marian instead of Marion. Either way I think it is classy and lovely.

Love it. its on my list..i had a lecturer last term named Marion, although i much prefer the spelling Marian for a girl, as Marion can be used for a boy.
i don't think the Robin Hood connection is a big deal. there are worse things to be teased about.
i also have Marianne on my list, i think is also very pretty.

Don't know... I much prefer Marion, which looks more um.. complete, distinctive and I feel like it had very much energy in it.
Marian is, after Marion, is kind of meh - too neutral and reminds me of all the "nice" names everyone seems to like, but not enough to adding it to the PNL or thinking of using it.
I also can't see Marion on a male: there's something strongly feminine in it. I adore it pronounced the French way - mah-ree-AWN. Such a brilliant name! :)I'm very glad that you posted about those two names - now I'm thinking of adding Marion to my PNL, again. :D

I like it.It's deff. more feminine to me than Marion. Though all the Marions I know are a) female and b) my grandmothers. I wouldn't mind meeting a male Marion...Sorry, getting slightly OT. I DO like Marian, and the minor Robin Hood association doesn't bug me - in fact, I like that.

I like Marion very much. It's a decent name, uncommon, and underwhelming in a good way. I think I like it for a middle name moreso than for a first name.As for the spelling, I'm partial to Marion. Marian looks off to me, but perhaps that's only because I'm so used to seeing the Marion spelling.

I'm unsure as to Marian or Marion - Marion seems stronger but Marian is more elegant. I'm not too keen on it - I know a Marian and she has a daughter my age and sons in their twenties so I see it as a rather middle-aged name. Still, I'd much rather see a Marian than a Nevaeh.

Marian is delightful. It has a nostalgic, retro feeling to it. Very sweet. Can you tell me the difference bewen Marian and Marion? Is one traditional male, the other female? Or are they just variants? Marion looks odder at first glance. But then I think how Isobel has grown on me and Marion could have the same effect. But I'd like to be sure of the genders / origins before I let myself drift.

I think Marion is the original female name, a variant of Mary. Marian is usually a male name, a form of Marianus, but is also used as a female name as a variant of Marion. I actually have a great-great-great-grandmother named Marion.
