Re: "What are the worst names you can think of" (long)
OK - despite the length, I felt the need to comment on every name. But if you are looking for the Reader's Digest version:My take on most of these names is that they are not my taste, but are not bad enough to qualify as terrible. There are a few I love, and a few I agree are terrible.
Penelope - stronly disagree - love this name
Engrid (I assume Ingrid) - disagree with Ingrid, some people just don't have taste. Unless it really is Engrid, then I have to agree.
Godfrey - while I don't think this quite qualifies as terrible, I don't think it's great.
Dick - There are unfortunate associations here. I would say it belongs on the list.
Sunshine - Agree strongly - this is a pet's name.
Rainbow - See Sunshine
Stormy - See Rainbow
Candy - Hmmmm. This is a legit nn for Candice, which is a cute name, but Candy as full name I'm not sure. It has some sexual associations. Still, don't know if it truely deserves to be labeled "terrible"
Destiny - Agree
Hope - Hmmm. I'm not a virtue name fan, but I wouldn't call this terrible. The only virtue names I truely hate are Charity and Chastity, but I avoid virtue names more so on principle and less so because I dislike the name's other merits.
Daisy - Don't love, but not terrible.
Princess - See Sunshine Rainbow and Stormy
Gaye - I work with a lady named Gaye. She's older, in her 60's and was born before Gay became commonly known slang for homosexual. She loves her name. The associations scare people, but it's not a bad name.
Francis - Don't love, but don't think it belongs on a terrible list.
Maude - Not a fan, but I hear it more and more. I think it is coming back.
Patunia (Petunia) - Beginning to accept this name. I can understand why someone else would consider it terrible, but I don't.
Richard - This is a nice name. It's the nn Dick that turns people off. But there's also Rick and Rich, and it's not fair to judge a name on just one of its nns.
Sheldon - Don't love, but wouldn't call it terrible.
Simon - Love this. Disagree.
Edgar - I can see why someone would call this terrible, but I appreciate the name.
Beatrice - Love this. Some people are just close minded.
Ronald - A little dated, but not terrible.
Donald - See Ronald.
Frank - Love this. This is due for a comeback. Open your eyes people!
Bob - Not great, but not terrible.
Kitty - Hmmmm. This was the name of one of my distant relatives. Hard to take seriously, but because of the return of old-fashioned nns, I'm not sure it's terrible, even if its not my taste.
Gladys - I hear more and more people praise this name, but I agree it's terrible, and not all old fashioned names deserve a comeback.
Chastity - Ugh. Agree
Chance - Not a favorite, but again not terrible.
Burt - Agree.
Earl - OK, but not terrible.
Esther - Disagree.
Daryl - Don't love, but not terrible.
DeShawn - Hmmm. It's not my taste. It sounds terrible to me, but I don't know if it deserves to go on a terrible list.
LaToya - See DeSawn.
Barbara - Not terrible, just not fashionable now.
Deborah - Maybe like Barbara this is not fashionable, but that does not make a name terrible. I think Deborah is one of the best popular names of the 50's. This is a tasteful choice.
Owen - Lovely name. What are these people thinking?
Bartholomew - Ok, a little awkward. Maybe this deserves to be here.
George - What? this is a classic.
Thomas - Another classic - there is nothing wronge with this.
Brady - Not terrific, but not terrible.
Susan - What? This is not terrible at all. It's not one of my faves, and was over-used for a long time to the point that it became generic, but once the over-use dies down, it will be appreciated again.
Conrad - Uh, ok. Don't know if I would call it terrible.
Oliver - Great name. Disagree.
