Papillon
I love Butterfly for a name. WDYT of Papillon [G] any middle name suggestions? I'd use Butterfly itself in English, but only or a middle name.
ETA: I know it's a breed of dog but that doesn't bother me as all dog breeds names come from somewhere. I do like Papillion as well for either gender, prefer a girl.
ETA: I might just stick with Butterfly or Aponi, as I dislike the name Mariposa (doesn't sound pretty IMO, plus it's a street near me).

Ick. I dislike Papillon a lot. The first thing I think when I see it is papilla, which means "nipple" in Latin. Papilla is also used as a pathological term for any sort of lesion that looks, well, nipple-y. Aside from that association, it looks veyr unfeminine.
Butterfly really isn't much better. It sounds like something a 3 year old would choose for a name. Sorry.

thanks everyone I think I'll go with [m]
Aponi it's Native American (Blackfoot) for the word "butterfly" I remember looking it up the other day and forgot it meant that.

I don't love Aponi (it looks like it would be pronounced just like "a pony"), but I'd honestly rather see that than Butterfly or Papillon. Although I do prefer Mariposa, as others have mentioned.
Aponi's pretty.
Probably would give less people heart attacks to hear :P
I actually don't think Papillion sounds as terrible to the ears as everyone thinks, but I would never use it on a human.
Does Butterfly have a special meaning to you, or do you just like the idea of it?

I like butterflies, My sister I was thinking of maybe honouring her with it as she adores butterflies.

I'd rather see Butterfly than Papillon. I also like Cho / Chou and Chouko.

ETA: Forgot to mention. My first association with Papillon is the movie of the same name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papillon_%28film%29

Even if you don't think of the dog, most will, and I cannot stand Papillons. Plus, it's a boy's name. Not a girl's name (Papillion, that is). I too prefer Mariposa. Papillon doesn't even have a nice sound. It's just all-around ick to me.

ROFL! Ditto.
This made me laugh hysterically.....
I haven't laughed this hard in weeks.

It also tease-worthy, the nn "Pap" isn't very attractive!
I'd give her the NN Butterfly if I ever used the name [which I doubt]

Ditto.
I saw Pap and then "Pap Smear" came to mind.

Don't like Butterfly or Papillon. I'd much prefer the Spanish/Italian version of butterfly, Mariposa(Spanish)and Farfalla(Italian)don't know if i've spelt that right?
not a fan of Spanish names there's a street near me named Mariposa as well I think of that.
Farfalla reminds me of food but it does look interesting and could grow on me. Thanks for your suggestions anyways :).

I've always liked Borboleta, but I don't think I'd use it as a name. It's just fun to say :P
I love Mariposa as well
It just has a much prettier and more namey sound.
