John / Jon / Jonathan
Just wondering what you guys think of these names. Which one would you use? What nick name, if any, would you use? Is it too dated, popular, and boring or is it strong and classic in your opinion?
Nicknames I could think of using are:
For any of them:
Johnny
Jack
Jay
For Jonathan:
Jon
Nathan
Nate
Are there any forms in other languages that you like better? Like...
Hans
Sean
Shane
Yan
etc.
Basically just wondering about your overall opinion of John and similar names.
Thanks!

I love John! I also really like Jonathan. It is not dated it all, it the basically the most classic name. Both but espically John have a lot of history, which is great. Both are common, but not boring.
For a nickname of a full name, I love Jack. I really Jonathan with the nickname Jon. Jon spelled this way, to me, is just a nicknname for Jonathan, not a full name.
I would use it for either a first or middle name. I only have two names picked out for my future sons, William and Alexander, so I might use it if I had more than two sons.

I like both John and Jonathan quite a bit, as well as variants of John such as Ian, Evan, Owen, Sean, and Shane.
For a small boy, I would be willing to use Johnny as a nn for either John or Jonathan. I'm not a fan of Jack at all.

Well John and Jonathan are two separate names that just happen to sound similar. I prefer Jonathan's long sound over John's simple plain sound most of the time.
For Jonathan I prefer nicknames like Jonny or Nonny (a friend calls her brother Jonathan this) and rather dislike Jon but Jack is alright. Jack isn't really correct seeing it comes from John which is a different name.
For John I think that Johnny or Jack are perfect nns and nine times out of ten I prefer Jack as a full name on it's own. Jack Nathaniel is a favorite combo of mine that actually has both of the John and Jonathan elements (and meanings) to it.
I really do prefer forms of John over John itself. Scottish forms like Ian / Iain are delightful as are Ioan, Sean, Evan, Owen, Eoin, Hans, Yoan and Yannick.

I've never been much of a fan of these names, but I'd choose John if I had to. I very much prefer Jack as a given name, but it's also nice as a nn for Jackson, which I'm quite fond of for some reason (despite its apparent trendiness). Jonathan, while it has a nice sound to me, just seems dated ... and Jon without the -h- just confuses me.
I also really like Shane. . . in fact, I prefer Shane and Jack to any of the other forms you mentioned.
hope that helps!

I wouldn't use any of them personally, but I much prefer John over the other two.
BTW, I feel Jon is nothing more than a nn for Jonathan and therefore the 2 names are one in the same.
Jonathan is definitely more dated than John. John is a hands down classic that would never date a kid.
Despite being classic, I still find John rather generic. I find the foreign forms of John much more appealing than John itself. I like:
Ian
Sean
Hans

I am truly madly deeply in love with the name John. Always have been and probably always will be.
I like Jonathan as a middle name...like Thomas Jonathan or Rhys Jonathan or something of that nature. Do not like nn Jon.
Sean is pleasant-sounding, and it's on my PNL.
Loathe Jonny, Johnny.
Jack is overused, IMO.
And I would never ever consider Nathan as a nn for Jonathan. Nathan is clearly its own name, I think. Same goes for Nate.
edited! wrong word! oops.
