Thinking about some names
I was hoping to find some more masculine names, but as per my usual behavoir, in trolling the site I found mostly feminine thought-provokers.WDYT?Aracelis
Blanca
Elodia
Mireia (I still love Mireille and Mirielle, but let's add this for ease of pronunciation, shall we?)
Pacifica (completely GP)Also found Jessenia, which made me giggle. Possible alternative to Jessica? Spyridon (GP)
Mateo
Marco (Mark is too stark for me and I don't like Marcus.)
Gaspar (I like Jasper too but right now I prefer this.)Thoughts, combos? :)

Aracelis -It sounds ugly and masculine, sorry.
Blanca -I really dislike it and naming your child the word for white is a bit too close to Nazi-ism IMO.
Elodia -I can't stand the sound but I adore Elodie.
Mireia -Really gorgeous.
Pacifica -Interesting. A good GP, I think.
Jessenia -Meh. I prefer Jessamine and Jasmine. Spyridon (GP) -Fun!
Mateo -I love Matteo. This looks a bit funny to me.
Marco -I like this a lot, actually.
Gaspar -Gas fart. Sorry!

Ya know, white can mean pure and a myriad of other things, too. And it's also a lovely colour. If white=Nazi-ism is your immediate association, it makes me wonder about your prejudices...

Nazi-ism? I think that's a bit much.Do you also strongly dislike Bianca, Blanche, and every other name found here: http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?nmd=md&terms=white Does this mean that Cole, Melanie, Jett and every other name that means "black" are too Afro-centric? Inquiring minds want to know. I've never heard of this reaction, and it boggles my mind to make such a leap of association.

No...(m)That isn't really what I meant, though I'm not sure how to convey what I did mean. The name Blanca very obviously means "white" to me because I speak Spanish, and so that is my knee-jerk reaction. Is it an entirely realistic and correct reaction? Not really, and I freely admit that. It's my problem that I think of that, but you asked for opinions and that is mine. It's not that the name means "white" in and of itself, I think, it's that it's so blatantly obvious to me. That might be closer to what I meant.ETA: I also did a pretty big report on race recently, so I apologize if that has colored my opinion.

Aracelis - very awkward. Arcelia is very nice, but Aracelis feels and looks and sounds just awkward.
Blanca - Bl- names sound very bad to me, and this literally does just mean "white" in Spanish, which makes it very odd to me. I adore Bianca.
Elodia - dislike the sound. I'm not a fan of the syllable "el" in general. It is also not quite substantial enough for my tastes. I don't like Elodie or Melody either, but would prefer Elodie to Elodia I think.
Mireia - really dislike, along with Mirielle and Mireille. These names are sooo sweet. I am drowning in molasses over here.Have you seen Jennica? Eeee. I like Jessica quite a lot actuallyI love Spyridon, I think it would be a great MN.
Mateo is way too sweet for me, I hate how it looks and sounds. The only Matthew cognate I can tolerate is Matthias.
I love Marco, it is so perfect - sharp and neat and clever.
Gaspar is hard for me to like because I recently fell in love with Gaspard. I can't stand Jasper though, for some reason - I guess I associate it too much with the jemstone. Gaspar is good though but I think Gaspard is better.

Araceli and Pacifica are some of my big huge favorites :) Aracelis is nice, too. I might add my personal combos for the two when I got home to my personal computer and my lists. Actually, Mateo is quickly becoming one of my faves, as it's not as harsh or common as Matthew.Mireia has too many vowels for me.

Aracelis - pretty, though personally I prefer Araceli
Blanca - love the sound
Elodia - yeah, I think of weed.
Mireia - nice sound, looks pretty on paper.
Pacifica (completely GP) - I can imagine calling a pet fish this, it's kinda cool, but maybe a bit much for a person. Also found Jessenia, which made me giggle. Possible alternative to Jessica? - don't see why not, though I've grown quite fond of Jessica lately, despite its datedness.Spyridon (GP) - I have a distant cousin called this who goes by Spyro. It's neat, though I have no idea what kind of reactions he gets from his name.
Mateo - fine for someone else
Marco - I know its not, but Marco has always seemed like a nn for Mark to me. I like it though.
Gaspar - really dislike the way it looks and sounds, but then again I'm not a Jasper fan either.

I think I'm missing something.A couple people have mentioned weed with Elodia, and I have no idea why. What am I forgetting or not knowing?

Elodia is a species of seaweed--we used it in biology in my high school. Check out what you get when you Google imagesearch it, and you'll see what I mean. :)It's not really a bad association, but for me, it's nothing that improves a name that I already don't care for.ArrayEta: Ack--see Kate, lol. Clearly, I didn't pay quite enough attention to note the spelling.

Elodea is a weed.See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elodea

Huh.I could've googled, my bad. I just thought it was some sort of random slangy or pop-culture assocation I was clueless about. No, it's really seaweed. Huh. Perchance we'll stick with Elodie, which I do like, but I prefer prn the French way to the English, although I think I like Elodia over the French Elodie anyway just for lack of pretention that way. *shrug*

I'm sure this sounds weird, but I like Elodea (the seaweed). It is fun to look at under a microscope and I think it looks pretty in a fish tank. For me, it wouldn't be a negative association for Elodia.
Edited for spelling.

Aracelis - Too...weird? Awkward? I prefer Arabella and Araminta (GP).
Blanca - I prefer Bianca.
Elodia - This one is gorgeous, actually. Much better than Elodie and Eloise and Eloisa. :)
Mireia (I still love Mireille and Mirielle, but let's add this for ease of pronunciation, shall we?) - Mirei Mikuna is a character in a video game I play, but she's a nice character, so it probably doesn't matter to you. But, that's the first thing that comes to my mind. Mireia is a very pretty name. *considers adding to already huge PNL*
Pacifica (completely GP) - Pacific Ocean. Also found Jessenia, which made me giggle. Possible alternative to Jessica? - Meh, It's better than Jessica, but not much better. Jessamine? Jasmine? Spyridon (GP) - Spider Man!
Mateo - Prefer Matteo, but it's a very handsome name.
Marco (Mark is too stark for me and I don't like Marcus.) - Marco Polo. >.> As in, the game you play in the pool.
Gaspar (I like Jasper too but right now I prefer this.) - Jasper is much, much better imo. Gaspar is too...weirdish? I dunno. And sorry for all the images. I'm just bored. D:D

Aracelis - I prefer Araceli, but this is nice, too.
Blanca - Never really liked this one, possibly because it's similar to Bianca which I also don't like.
Elodia - Very nice. I slightly prefer Elodie, but only slightly.
Mireia - It looks pretty. How is it pronounced? me-RAY-ah?
Pacifica - It would make a cool mn. It's a bit much, but I kind of like it.
Jessenia - I've ben loving Jess- names recently. I think this will have to go on my list. Spyridon - I like just plain Spyro, but Spyridon is kind of cool.
Mateo - The spelling looks strange to me. Matteo looks more balanced.
Marco - I don't really like Marc- names in general, and I knew an obnoxious kid named Marco a couple years back, so I can't really get behind it.
Gaspar - It has a really unpleasant sound to it, IMO. I think Jasper or even Caspar would be better.

I have a cousin named Jesssenia. She is 10 and lives in Germany.
I love Elodia and Spyridon.

Aracelis ... this is nerdy.
Blanca ... dated.
Elodia ... not pretty compared to Élodie.
Mireia ... again, stick to the prettire French version of Mireille.
Pacifica ... I can't really see it, and it gives the child an expectation of being pacified.
Jessenia ... I prefer Yesenia.Spyridon ... not so much.
Mateo ... NOT my style. Too Latin for my taste.
Marco ... better, but see above.
Gaspar ... Prefer the French form, Gaspard.

While I mostly like what you have to say on the boards, this was kind of eyeroll inducing. It's not that I'm bothered you don't like the names, as I said I'm only pondering them, but "too Latin" and "prettier French"? That reeks of not only snobbishness but it's somewhat stinging on an international board. (For the record, I adore French girls' names and Irish/English boys' names. I actually decided I needed to broaden my horizons and culled this list while trolling the Spanish names section, with the exception of Spyridon.)Also, GP = guilty pleasure = name you wouldn't actually use on a child. And why is Aracelis "nerdy"? That interpretation intrigues me. I'd never seen the name before and liked the sound of it, so I wonder why you perceive it that way.

Well, as for Aracelis, is strikes me as a science fantasy type, which to me, isn't a stylish association.I really don't mind if my opinions sound snobby. I consider it a blessing to be so discriminating in this sense.

"I consider it a blessing to be so discriminating in this sense."True, high standards are laudable. But you risk offending others. You may not mind, of course. That is up to you. But to me you can catch more flies with honey. I'm here to bend others to my will and I'll stop at nothing, even sneaky politeness. :-) OK, I'll butt out of your conversation now. (And yes, I get the irony of that.)

Even though I write science fiction and fantasy novels, I agree I wouldn't name my daughter something I thought needed a pronunciation guide or sounded like a name I'd use in one of my novels, even ones I think are pretty.Pardon if I say that your last sentence made me laugh - snottiness is what it is, you can call it discriminating if you like. I was more concerned with the cultural implications of your comments than the highbrow part. :)

Just for the record (because I think you might be thinking this), I don't dislike the names BECAUSE they are Latin, I just generally don't prefer the Latin forms of names to the other forms. I especially think it's somewhat odd when someone who doesn't have Latino or Spanish heritage uses a name like Mateo, and it gives me the impression that they are only inspired to do so because of the tall, dark and handsome gentlemen they see portrayed on soap operas with names like Mateo or Antonio.
vote up1
Oh, okay. Taken together with the repetition of French versions being prettier it gave the impression you had some sort of cultural thing going on.That said, I simply don't LIKE Matthew. I knew some bad ones and I find the name bland and boring. I like the sound of Mateo. I wrote Mateo because, as I said, I got it from the Spanish list, but I prefer Matteo, which is Italian, and my grandfather was off-the-boat Italian. Although I agree it seems somewhat odd for someone without the heritage to use certain names in some situations (how much more could I qualify that?), I don't have an overall problem. The naming pool gets a little shallow otherwise and there are some great names or variants of names from other cultures. Further, I try not to prescribe motive to other people's naming habits. They might have a good reason for using a name of a different ethnicity, and even if they don't and just like the sound, so what? I might look oddly at the very Irish family naming their daughter Svetlanka but I wouldn't think twice about it, really.

Aracelis, Mireia & Mateo are beautiful!

Aracelis - Much prefer Araceli.
Blanca - Love, love, love. Also love Franca.
Elodia - My first thought's seaweed, and then Euro-chic.
Mireia - I like it a great deal, and have for a long time, but right now, I much prefer Miria (MEER-ee-ah).
Pacifica - Doesn't appeal at all.
Jessenia - Too Brit-chic sounding for me.Spyridon - I've liked this one a long, long time. Very fun.
Mateo - Mateo looks incomplete to me; I'd much rather Matteo, though I think Matthiah and Matthias are more handsome on the whole.
Marco - Love Mark, love Marco...but I think Marcel and Marcellus are ultimately the best of the bunch, myself.
Gaspar - Doesn't appeal at all--looks like "gasper," which is a word that just sounds blech to me.Array
