Oscar
I think I might be starting to like this one immensely. It is so my style and I never even thought about it. Anyone else?
Don't bother with the "grouch" comments please (okay, if you MUST--but don't expect me not to roll my eyes noisily). I like names with these silly ironically cool associations, and I have known cool Oscar's, and normal Oscar's who didn't give a fiddler's frack about Oscar the Grouch.

It's an insanely yuppy and popular name in DC
I've known plenty of little Oscars. I think it's cute, though I wouldn't use it.

I only ever met one Oscar
And he's in his seventies and the janitor at the high school I went to. lol Strikes me as funny to see it becoming popular.
I like the name but not on an actual person. I could namea cat Oscar and it would work really well.
My very favorite Oscar is of course, Oscar the Grouch! Scram!!!

It is, though.
I've known between four or five young Oscars.

I live in DC (actually Fairfax County, VA--born and raised in Montgomery County, MD), and I didn't notice Oscar except for one extraordinarily wealthy Peruvian family I know, but if I did notice it anywhere else, it wouldn't bother me. I'm not so vain that I want to appear like I am beyond the influence of someone else's ideas. LOL.
I admire my fellow tasteful Washingtonians.

That wasn't my point.
I lived in DC proper for the majority of my life (ie the actual city) and I worked at a church with a preschool. I saw at least four or five Oscars - I merely wanted to make the point that the name is usable and being used.
As for Washingtonians having good taste...that depends on which area and which demographic and just the person in general. If/when I'm back in DC I'll post a list of names from our Summer Camps (I worked at a church and my dad runs a non-profit). It's fun to see all the different names - the international names from embassies, the yuppie nams, the kreativ names...only reason I didn't mind doing data entry once in a while.

Also...
I really don't consider those who lived in MoCo or Fairfax as Washingtonians, at all, and the majority of my friends don't, either. They were the rich, spoiled, obnoxious brats who made everyone's life miserable.

How mean you are. Don't dismiss us just because we prefer a little bit of country air in the evening over constant sirens and tourist groups.
I thought about living on 16th and S Street NW for a minute (especially now that they have that Whole Foods right there), but honestly I think it's too stressful downtown to be there ALL the time. I like Alexandria, but my first choice to live would probably be Takoma Park with its delightfully Bohemian occupants.
It is getting less appealing due to a rise in crime in Takoma Park though, which is a pity. I always pinpointed it as my true home, as I was born there. I picture myself in a little yellow bungalow there (actually I think a grayish eggshell with charcoal shutters is the thing now), composing happily.
For now though, Virginia is idyllic.

Unless you pay taxes
Deal with the realities of living in DC, don't complain about the metro system (which forces them to put money in the metro system for the damn yuppies and leave the bus system a mess), deal with the constant chaos of living in DC, etc...you are not a Washingtonian. In fact I know very few people who live in the 'Burbs who describe themselves as such - and those are the most obnoxious bunch.
As I stated: I grew up in DC, well before the gentrification started and the soul was ripped out. I don't like what is happening to my city and I certainly don't like people who call themselves Washingtonians and who help to perpetuate the mess.
This is now off-topic and can be continued on the Lounge if you wish.

It's my city too, whatever your opinion may be, becuase it feels like home to me.
As far as regentrification goes, I agree that it isn't fair to the city's poorer long-time occupants, especially their building that stadium and all and displacing so many. It does make me sad.
I think that you should reconsider your theory that people with money aren't compassionate. I know it's difficult to see kindnesses in such a community, but that is because truly good deeds are often done in secret.

I have loved Oscar for years. It is rising in popularity though which makes me sad.
Why does it make you sad if a great name becomes popular? It makes me joyous!

I love Oscar! I remember I told my father several years ago that I want to have a son named Oscar and he laughed at me. I suppose the only problem for me is that I had a dog named Oscar growing up, so in a way I'd feel like I was naming my child after a dog. Thus, I don't know that I'll ever use it, but I would love to see another person use it!
I love the name Oscar. it's one of my favourite boys names, and will very likely be a serious consideration for a future son one of these days (After I have my August, of course).
ETA: My Oscar combo's. Not that you asked, but, hey.
Oscar Leonidas
Oscar Theodore
Oscar Tobias
Oscar Veritas
Oscar Mattias

Yeah, I've liked it since I re-noticed it (first time was Sesame Street). That was when my friend named her son Oscar in 2003. I think it is uncommon enough in my world that it could suit any kind of guy.
Until today, though, it had escaped my notice that it is Gaelic. I always thought it was Scandinavian, or maybe German. Probably because young Oscar's dad is Norwegian, and because one of the proteins I worked on in the lab was named Oskar (by a German scientist who characterized it).

I like this name a lot. It's cute for a young boy and handsome on a grown man. It's on my PNL.
I see that I have a twin. Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. ;)
I hate to burst your bubble, but A's been using A since July 2, 2007.
I'll believe you when I see the registry info. :)
Not a registered user, but here's the post:

Now, I know this will make that cumbersome chip on your shoulder crack, so whatever snarky response you have can be PM'd.

Well, then I do have a twin. She can't have my wings though. I've decided. :)
My Oscar story
I suppose it is cool in a way, but I personally cannot take the name seriously. My sister was supposedly a boy for the first seven months of my stepmom's pregnancy and my dad wanted to use all of our family names because it was going to be his first and only male child and he didn't want anymore. So her name was going to be Robert David James Marshall if she was a boy. When my aunt heard of this she said "Are you serious? I'm not remembering all that! I'm gonna call him Oscar!" so therefore, sometimes we call my sister Veronica "Oscar". So I really can't give an unbiased opinion on it since its a family joke.
