Elizabeth and its Nicknames
To me, Elizabeth has always been a staid, filler-type name. I've never disliked it, but I've never been fond of it, either. Most of its nicknames didn't appeal to me. However, Bette has been growing on me, so I was curious to see what you all thought. What's your favorite nickname for Elizabeth, and why? Here's some of the nicknames I could find:Babette
Babs
Bess
Bessie
Beth
Bethany
Betsy
Bette
Betty
Bettina
Buffy
Elisa
Elise
Eliza
Elli
Elsa
Elsie
Libby
Lisa
Lissa
Liza
Liz
Lizzy
Lili

Elizabeth is my mn...And I've always adored it :pAnyway, as for my favourite Elizabeth nn... Izzie. Why? I just adore Izzie as a nn in general (usually for my current favorite, Isobel) but it's not so common as an Elizabeth nn. Close behind is Beth (nearly my fn) and Lily.

Well, since I got to know a very clever woman named Elizabeth, this name has suddenly started growig on me - I kind of authomatically imagine a bright girl from middleclassish family who hates her name's heavyness and hates the nickname that it used at home - Liz or something like that. (Maybe it's all because of "my" Elizabeth - she doesn't still like her name, and she never uses the nickname that was used by her mother - Betty.)
:D A good start, since I've been hating Elizabeth a long time...
(Even now I dislike the "royal" association - I think that monarchy is the last thing that a society needs to carry on it's shoulders, so I'm not fond of any names considerd royal)But now, to the nicknames:
I like Liz either as a nickname or as a full name, but I hate Lizzie, because it sounds so... little-precious.
The Elizabeth I know goes by Liza (LEE-zah), but I can't say I love this nickname. Buffy is kind of nice - I have been lately in love with some kind of silly names, and Buffy fits in this cathegory easily. Other B-names are ok., though a bit oldish-fussy-Victorian. :S
I hate Elisa, Elsa, Elisa, Eliza and Elsie. They'll always stay for me as full old-German-Wagnerian names - remember Lohengrin, which, btw, was one of the most popular operas in the Third Reich?
I also hate Lili, Lily, Lilly, Lilie etc etc. They're so - full-cutesy, even as nicknames. (The oly Lily-combo I like is Lily Ursula. It's perfect. I don't remember who did invent this gorgeous combo...)

Lizzie is definitely my favourite. I just find it really cute and it reminds me of Lizzie Bennet in Pride and Prejudice!

My favorite nns are:I *really* dislike Elizabeth, but I adore some of its nns.Bess - I didn't like this until I saw it listed on nymbler as a "jazz age name". Then I started thinking of the 1920s, and I just fell for it.
Betty - I thought it was old-fashioned until I heard of "Ugly Betty". Now it sounds cute and contemporary.
Bette - Short, sweet, and so much better than Beth.
Eliza - I'm a sucker for Victorian-sounding names.
Elli - I prefer Ellie, but both spellings are adorable.
Elsa / Elsie - Both are accused of being cow names but I think of a little country girl when I hear them.
Lili - It's sweet, but I prefer Lillie, and not as a nn for Elizabeth.

Bess! It's a new love as well. I used to hate it and think it was a cow name. Now, however, I thik it's delicate and beautiful, whil still having a bit of a strong punch to it.
*swoon*I'm still not really feeling Bessie though...maybe occasionally.

I love Elizabeth! I love the sound, the classiciness, the history with the queens, and the nickname choice making it great for any generation. I might use it for my baby girl. My husband and I are not sure what nickames we might use for her. Our favorites are Beth and Liz/Lizzie. Our next favorite is Bess. Bette sounds too old to me.

Elizabeth is perfectly decent, but I prefer Elisabeth. Bette really does nothing for me, and I hate Liz, Lizzy and Beth.My favorite nicknames are Ella, Ellie, Lily, Libby, Elise, Elisa and Elissa.

I really like Elizabeth (but prefer my familial Elisabeth spelling). It's one of the few "true classic" girls names I like (Agnes & Alice are the other two).
Elisabeth was my Grandmother's name and she went by Lili exclusively, so that's my favorite Elisabeth nickname. I also like Bess, Betty & Elsa as nicknames. But that's it.

Eliza or Lizziea

My favorite nns for Elizabeth are Lizzy and Betsy. I started liking Betsy while reading the "Betsy-Tacy" books. My sister Elizabeth "Lizzy" is named after her great-aunt Elizabeth "Betty" who was named after her aunt Elizabeth "Bess." I always thought that was interesting.

Liesl!I also love Bess, Betsy, Ellie, Libby, Liz (but my mom uses this one), and the almost-forgotten T nicknames for Elizabeth: Tibby, Tetty, Tetsy, and Tess. I would be willing to use Elise and Eliza as given names.I love Elizabeth. Just like Margaret, she gives you so many possibilities to play with.

I think Elizabeth is one of the most perfect girls names there is- Elizabeth, Katherine and Margaret are my list of perfect girls names, with Alice and Mary sometimes on and sometimes off. My criteria: lots of history and namesakes, lots of nickname options (this is where Alice and Mary fall down), beautiful, classic, unmistakably feminine yet truly strong in a way Micah and Ryan fail to be. It can get a little common/boring, though, especially when they all go by Liz, rather than using some of the other options.Personally, I love the B nicknames. Bess is my favourite. I also adore Betty, Betsy and Bette. Beth is quite nice, but I don't like it as much. Elisa and Lisa (I say both with a Z sound) are beautiful. Cat Stephens's 'Sad Lisa' made me fall in love with that name. Eliza and Liza are spunky and awesome. Lily is nifty. My father told me the other day that if he'd named me Elizabeth (he loved it but he and Jan decided to honour their sisters and go with Sarah Elaine- he also pointed out he couldn't have named me Elizabeth Elaine and Jan really wanted to honour her sister), my nickname would have been Lizbeth. I was sort of fond of it before but it's really growing on me now. Of course, it's kind of a long nickname and I probably would have been Elizabeth nn Lizbeth nn Bette.

It's so soft and delicate and... French. Oh, I don't know why I love it so much. I just do.

I adore Lisette, Lila, or better yet, Queen Elizabeth's own nickname, Lilibet.

The only reason I would use Elizabeth is because of Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. I would use the nickname Lizzie (although in the book it's spelt Lizzy). I actually really like the name Lizzie.Of your list I also like Beth, Elsa, Elisa and Eliza but I would use the last three as a separate name not a nickname for Elizabeth.Other ones: Lisette, Lisbeth, Lilibet (this is the Queen's nickname in the Royal Family from when she couldn't pronounce Elizabeth as a young child).

I totally agree with you about Elizabeth, however, its nns are some of the best. I read once years ago that Elizabeth is the little black dress of names because you can dress it up or down depending on the mood. I agree there as well. Elizabeth probably has more nn options than any other name (over 30). My faves are Bess, Betsy, Lily, Elise, Elisa, Liese and Lisette (the last four I'd use for Elisabeth). While not my favorite, Bette stands out. Are you pronouncing it like Bette Davis or Bette Midler?

Hadn't decided on the pronunciation yet, it goes back and forth. Some days, I like Bette (Midler), but most days I like Bette (Davis). Bette just looks so much more interesting and youthful than Betty.

I like Libby, but don't really associate it with Elizabeth. I would choose Beth if it was my name.

I prefer the spelling Elisabeth (although the name still is not one of my favourites- it's fine, classic etc but boring) and my favourite nn is Bess.
I would almost be tempted to use Elisabeth just for the nns because there is one to fit just about every personality and so many of them are so spunky IMO (Bess, Betsy, Beth, Issy, Lil, Elsie, Elsa...)

My favortie nn for Elizabeth are:Eliza
Liza
LibbyI just love all three names and I like that they're more unusual than Liz or Lizzey.

This always frustrates me.Realistically, the only nicknames I have ever heard for Elizabeth are:Liz, Lizzie/Lizzy, Beth, Bess/Bessie, Bette/Betty/Betsy, Libby.I consider the following to be completely different names:Babette
Babs

Elise
Eliza
Elli
Elsa
Elsie
Lisa
Lissa
Liza
Lili.

My favourites are Beth and Lise. Both of them are very pretty. I've always associated Beth with the character in Little Women, which is why I like it. Liz and Lizzie are nice too, but a little boring.I haven't considered Bette before. It's unique and refreshing. Might grow on me.

I like Beth, Betsy, Libby, Elise (though I like it more as its own name than a nickname of Elizabeth), Elsie, Eliza (ditto what I said about Elise), and Liza (ditto Elise and Eliza).Others nicknames that I like but aren't listed are Ella, Lissy, Liesel / Liesl and Lies (which totally wouldn't work in any English-speaking country, but I have a darling Belgian friend by this name).

Beth--most popular, I think.Bethany--this is entirely a name on its own; some of the others I can see, but this one? Never ever. Elsa--a name on its own..Elsie--a name on its own, not a NN for Elizabeth.Libby--cute, probably my fave of your list.Lissa--I know an Elisabeth who goes by this.Liz--cute and popular.Lizzy--cute and popular. How about Lissie?

Betty
Eliza
Elli
Elsa
Lizzy
LiliI dislike Beth. I've known three Beths and all of them are terrible people. Perhaps it's not in the name, but that's what I associate it with.
