Miriam and Margaret
I am torn on these names. On one hand I love the Hebrew feeling of Miriam and its' strength, on the other I love the solidness of Margaret.
I'm probably drawn more to Margaret than Miriam, but I wonder if Margaret will be too dated for my child and she would prefer Miriam. Miriam also has more religious connections, which is surprisingly important to me. It's less so about religion than family naming traditions.
Opinions? I am really thinking of going with Margaret at this point.

Hmm... right now my inclination would be to lose them both and go for Margeary. :-)
But if I had to choose one... hmm... it would depend on the nn, honestly. Miriam nn Mim would be awesome. Margaret would be cool if the nn was Meg or Mage. I would probably pick Mim out of all of these.
Otherwise, I am just not digging Miriam or Margaret right now. I would chose Miriam because it is less common historically.

Kill me if I'm wrong, but Miriam Margaret as a combo kind of has a special zing to it, in my ears, at least.
I love Margaret. It is my grandmother's middle name, but a lot of people do not like the harsh 'g'.
I think I'd go with Miriam, I love the name. It has such a great flow, and I love Mir or Miri as a nick name. However Maggie and Meg are also fun for Margaret.

From what everyone is saying
I'd better go with Margaret. Mir and Miri are out for nicknames, too close to my niece's name of Mira.
And I like Miriam Margaret. A lot. :-D

FWIW, I think Margaret is far too classic to ever be dated, and Miriam weighs more toward the solid end of the spectrum than the flighty end.
I really prefer Miriam in this instance. Don't get me wrong--I love Margaret. (Though, truthfully, I love every single one of Margaret's nicknames more than Margaret itself.) Margaret feels too safe, too conservative, and less meaningful here. Miriam just feels more like you.

I prefer Margaret as well. I don't really think it's dated though - I know Margarets of all ages.
Margaret is one of my absolute favourite names, so it's no contest for me... But Miriam is lovely as well. Somehow it seems more dated to me than Margaret, though. I don't know why. It reminds me of a late 30s housewife. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)But that might just be because of Hey Arnold! One of the characters' mother was named Miriam, and she was not the best character... Well anyway, to summarise, I like them both but much prefer Margaret.
Hehe I was almost Miriam :P It was my dad's mother's name and she hated it so she went by LaVerne, which was her MN (and is my mn now). It was actually my mother who liked the name. I don't know that she ever met my grandmother, because she died before my parents were married, but ANYWAYS, I actually really like the name.
I really like Miriam nn Miri or Mir, but Margaret is just such a strong name. Plus it comes with great NNs like Peg, Meg, Peggy, Maggie, etc.
I think both names are dated somewhat, but Margaret (IMO) is more common, at least where I'm from, so even if you think Margaret is more dated, it's common so it wouldn't be as weird.
I too, am torn, but as a whole, I like the name Miriam more than Margaret. I love the name Maggie :]
I kind of prefer Miriam because, despite its actual age, it just seems fresher. There are a lot of Maggie/Margarets our age, I think.
I like them both as well.
But I think today Miriam wins. I like the Mira or Miri nn possibilities and the softness of sound.

And I couldn't use either of those. :-D
I love the nn Miri, but my niece is Mira. :-D No go, part of the reason I would use Margaret - I'd call her May.
