I'd go with kah-tah-REE-na just talking about the name, because the only context that I ever say it aloud is in reference to my great grandmother Catarina, who was Italian.
On an American kid, I'd say it kat-a-REE-na off the bat if I was, say, reading it from a list or something of that nature. I'd feel like a tool for affecting a foreign pronunciation in that context unless specifically told otherwise.

The funny thing is I would use the foreign pronunciation, as it would most likely be the correct one where I'm from - D.C. I think that's the reason I pronounce it kah-tah-REE-na and he pronounces it kat-a-ree-na, we're used to two different worlds.
