Probably there were many people like you who thought it was "unique and romantic" all about the same time.

It makes me sad that it got so popular so suddenly. At one point before it was popular (not in the top 100, I don't know it's actual rank), I decided it was a very pretty name. I'd only heard it on Ava Gardner. Then one day a few years later it's in the top 100 and it will likely be in the top 10 for 2007. Otherwise I would have considered using it. I always thought Ava Catherine was a lovely name. I have no idea how or why it became so popular. I guess because everyone else suddenly realized it was pretty too!

I think it's popular because it's part of the trend for "old-fashioned" names, along with Emma, Olivia, Isabel etc.

Well, it's anything but unique.

I used to quite like Ava, but then it attacked the charts...I'm now officially sick of it.
It's really a shame though because theoretically it's a beautiful name. Eve is even better IMO, plus it's way less common.
As for it's popularity, I blame stars like Reese Witherspoon who saw the old Hollywood glamour in it, the public copied them , and now we have a surplus of little Avas running around.

I think it's a pretty name, so that's part of it right there. But I also think a lot of it has to do with celebrities using it.

Because it has a long a sound which is currently popular, like in Hayley. It ends in an a, is old fashioned which is currently in (like Emily) and very feminine (like Isabella). It has that celebrity image, Ava Gardner, and has recently been used by lots of celebrities on their children.

Ava is on our list... but since we've been pg (7 mos) we've heard of 6 Ava's being born... so it'll probably get nixed off the list fairly soon! LOL.
