Julian and Novinha
I've just re-read Ender's Game and books of the series for the umpteenth time and have realized that I truly want to use Julian. What names match it? I've been thinking of Julian Raphael. Also, in the series there is a character named Novinha. She's from a Spanish colony and I'm not 100% sure what her name is supposed to mean. It's a "modern" Spanish name. Wdyt? I think it's cool, but would never use it.

I love Julian and Julian Raphael flows beautifully even though Raphael isn't something I'd usually go for. I don't care for the 'h' in Novinha but it sounds nice.

Novinha means "really young" and it's a horrible name, in my opinion. :(

Julian Raphael is great, I like it a lot. Novinha is nms, I don't like it.

Also: Questions on Initials. One of my favorite combinations is Ivy Cecilia. Her initials, however, would be ICK. Now my nieces and nephew love their initials on things, is this an issue? (My youngest niece's initials are LGB and several people have joked on her initials - and they're not as overt as ICK is.) Also, is JRK a problem? It's one letter away from jerk.TY.

I don't think it's a good enough reason to be put off of names you otherwise like, especially as it's not something like Anne Sarah Smith or Simon Henry Ingall-Thomson which would deal very bad results indeed...

ICK is out, I feel - it's just asking for trouble. I think it's nice to have a decent set of initials to put on things, and I'm grateful that my parents decided not to give me the initials JAW :-DJRK is touch-and-go . . . I avoided Jean Rosalie for a while the year before last because I was dating a guy whose surname started with K, because of the 'jerk' problem. But she might get away with it.

I know that a lot of the baby books think those sorts of initials would be a big no no. But, really, unless the middle name is known to the classmates and whatnot, I don't see it being too big of a problem.

But I think of monograms, having your initials on things, etc. Then it is a bit of a problem. *shrugs*

my initials are ARM, and it never bothered me too much. also, alot of places such as Polo monogram middle, first and then last. so it would be CIK.

Novinha (and the colony) are actually Portuguese, not Spanish. I've always assumed that her given name was Nova, since -inha is a diminutive that means small (and a common naming suffix). It would make sense in context, if Orson Scott Card is tying meanings in with characters...seeing as she's on a new world and all. I like Novinha and Nova, but I wouldn't use Novinha unless in a Portuguese context.I like Julian a lot, it's a family name for me and I like the sound of it (even though it is a trendy sound, i.e. a boy's name ending in n). I think it's really classy but not too pretentious.

In a portuguese context, Novinha is not a real name, it's an adjective. She would be joked as hell. :P

Good to know! Thanks for the info. (I wouldn't have used it in any case but it's always nice to know.)
