I love Melanie, it's so feminine sounding to me. I would prefer Lanie as a nickname to Mel. (Ugh-I know a few Melanie's that go by Mel-yuck!)Melanie Rose
Melanie Cathleen
Melanie Suzette
Melanie Faith
Melanie Hope
Melanie Jane

It makes me think of skin cancer - melanoma.

It's very pretty. However it's a bit a 1980s name in my mind, but maybe I'm getting confused with Melissa.
Lanie is so-so. Mel and Mellie are cuter as nicknames.

Melanie is beautiful! It's well-known, but not overused, and easy to say and spell.
I don't think Lanie is too farfetched, but it is a stretch.

Melanie is okay. It's one of those names that has never been over popular where I live but still recognizable and, quite frankly, a bit boring in my eyes.

Melanie BiancaETA: I can see Lanie as a possible NN bu, as a Melania, I can tell you that Mel is the one most people will pick up on. :)
