Yet another celebrity baby
Actor/comedian David Alan Grier and his wife, Christine Y. Kim, welcomed a baby girl on Thursday and named her Luisa Danbi Grier-Kim. They claim Danbi means "sweet rain" in Korean (his wife is Korean, so I'm assuming this is true). http://www6.comcast.net/tv/articles/2008/01/13/People.Grier/

"Sweet rain" is nice although Danbi's not something I'd choose. I like Luisa very much although I prefer it spelt Louisa. Its great to see something beautiful and classy like Luisa instead of the annoyingly trendy Jackson... or something like that. =)

Yes, I wouldn't say anything about the combo is "trendy", which is nice

Luisa is very nice. It's the Italian spelling. :-)

...Luisa is the main spelling in Spanish and is also used in German.

I find it interesting they used this spelling, though, since he's African-American and she's Korean. :)

What's wrong with Louisa?I like Louisa...much better than Luisa. Some people may think it a tad old-fashioned, but is that a valid reason to use Luisa, which is horrible?

I prefer Luisaz

The problem--for me, at least--is that she says it unequivocally: Luisa is bad, badbadbad, and it's clearly lesser than English Louisa. The way her post reads to me suggests that either she thinks Luisa is one of those newfangled misspellings, which is quite ignorant, or that it's just not as good as Louisa, which is ethnocentric.I'm all for the disliking of names and the admitting to disliking names that you really find ick, for whatever reason. After all, look at my reaction to Harlow (namely JESUS CHRIST IT'S A LION GET IN THE CAR), as just one example. But to me, scholasticastewart came off less as "I don't like this name," and more "This spelling has no inherent value," which I'm hoping we can all agree simply isn't true.Array

OT...The JESUS CHRIST ITS A LION GET IN THE CAR thing made me crack up laughing. I've never really heard that other than on the other forum I go on a lot.Look at this drawing I made (where I oh so explicitly labeled it. XP) : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/Kalianna/IMG_0047.jpg

It's one of my favourite phrases at the moment--I've been a Toothpaste for Dinner fan for a good four, five years now, and that's one of my favourite strips.(Reference, for those who aren't so familiar with it: http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/083005/basic-electronics-symbols.gif):DArray

Personally, this is my favorite 'image' for that phrase
(But I'm not even slightly "intellectual", lol.)

ah okay I get you now I understand why people were commenting :) [m]I thought she was just saying she just thought the name was horrible in general.

Luisa's only horrible if you're ethnocentric or ignorant.Array

Umm...That's a bit like hearing about a baby named Jane and asking, "But what wrong with Joan?" Well, nothing, but it's not the name they chose.Luisa is a legitimate variant, and it's pronounced a little differently. I personally prefer Louisa, but Luisa is certainly not horrible.

Why is Luisa horrible? It's a legitimate spelling.

Luisa's not that bad.At least it's not Loouessah.

Umm...no one said Louisa was horrible. where did you get that from? Oh and according to the article it IS Luisa
