I am American and I pronounce Tara in the 'British' way, but I pronounce Sarah the 'American' way.
If you want an American name that sounds that way, in which all Americans typically pronounce it, then try Mara. I betcha no one will pronounced in Mare-uh, but will pronounce it Marr-uh.
