It's per-seff-o-nee. I don't think any other pronunciation is legit...
I think people consider it a guilty pleasure because they just won't use it, even though they like it. The meaning is pretty bad, and the myth behind the name isn't pleasant either. Plus, people'd mispronounce it.

I've never heard it pronounced any other way but per-seff-o-nee either. As far as I know, that's the only pronunciation. It's definitely the original pronunciation.
But I can't imagine it would be mispronounced that often. Although, I find that I give the general public more credit than they deserve. Apparently there are a lot of people who don't read and/or aren't familiar with mythology even though you learn it in school. I guess they don't pay attention or retain information. I don't understand people.

I still really like it. I wouldn't call it a guilty pleasure because I can imagine using it...the only reason I wont use it is because there are quite a few names I like more - not because it's too weird to actually be bestowed upon a child.
