for a boy? any MN suggestions?
ETA: My cousin's MN is Ashley he's a boy. I never met any boy Ashley's personally but I have seen quite a few celebrities named Ashley who are male and heard of a few guys named it before.

Personally I find it nicer on a boy, it's overused for girls. It reminds me of the "Gone with the Wind" character, and I have the impression in the UK it's still quite widespread for boys

I know plenty of boys named Ashley, but that's in Australia.

Not in the US
When I was a kid, I used to love the name Ashley for a boy. Then I remember hearing the hockey player Ashley Buckberger saying he was a born fighter since ever since kindergarten with a name like Ashley he's gotten beaten up so he had to learn to fight. It's the same as a boy named Sue.
In the UK and Australia, maybe Ashley is more accepted on boys, but not currently in the US or Canada.

I don't really see what the big deal about it is. To me, it seems like the appeal on BtN is mainly "it's so often used for girls that I LOVE it on a boy!"
But I don't love it on a boy, although I'd rather see it there. Thanks to BtN I can view it pretty objectively as primarily a boys' name, and it's still a wimpy surname to me anyway. I feel this way about Addison also.

Love it!
It was a masculine name back in the early 1900's (before it was big on females). Its declined on boys, probably due to the popularity of it on girls. I however love the name, but only for a boy. I feel this way about all the tradition boys names now more popular on girls.

I didn't used to like it much at all (girl or boy), but recently it's been growing on me for a boy. Not nearly enough for my own PNL, but I'm liking it a bit now. I think it's kind of nice.

I'm in England, and I know four boys named Ashley :)
I personally don't like it very much, but I think it's miles better on a boy than on a girl!
Maybe it would be better as a middle name for a boy living in the US, as it's such a popular name for girls there.

I know several male Ashley's, so I think it could work, it's nice, but not for a girl.
I think you'd need a decent strongish manly name for a name that seems girly to most people.

I only know personally one male Ashley. He's a bit older than me, so he was named before Ashley was really popular. Oddly enough, he has always gone by his middle name Matthew. I found out his first name completely by accident. He said that his mother had never known an Ashley of either sex but had always planned to call him Matthew/Matt. I can't remember if Ashley was some kind of family name or not.

I like it on a boy, but I hate it on a girl. Unfortunately, I don't think it is very usable on a boy nowadays. It would be similiar to using Loren (which I like) which sounds too similiar to the ever popular female Lauren. I actually know a couple guys with the name Loren but they either go by their middle name, or it already is their middle name and the rarely if ever disclose it to anyone. I find Ashley to be similiar.

Ashley isn't like Sidney/Sydney. Sidney at least has a fairly long history of use as a male name, so that even though it's been popular as a female name for generations, it could still be revived for males.
Ashley was never used much for males. Looking through the SSA's popularity lists, you won't find it very high up on the earliest lists, if you find it at all. When Ashley did become popular, it was almost exclusively used for females, and so it became, by default, a female name. Maybe not fair, but that's the way it worked out.

Well in an Australian context anyway (I know Sabrina is in the US, but for arguments sake)- in Australia Ashley was one of the most popular names for boys in the early to mid 80s along with Jason. It has continued to be in use for boys here much like those other tired names from the 80s. As an 80s baby, I know many a male Ashley.
Here, the spelling Ashleigh is the feminine spelling. There were two female Ashleighs in my grade at school as well as two male Ashleys. In all I probably know more male Ashleys, but frankly I think it is one of the few names that is truly unisex. The only one I can think of that people don't think of as overly girly or overly masculine is Jordan.
So basically, I don't think it is too late at all. I prefer it on a boy, but the name is way too tired on either sex IMO. It needs a break.
