My mother's name is Nicola, so I've grown up hearing NI-ko-la and hearing her complain about people that use the other pronunciation :-D It's a very English pronunciation and she's from England - I suspect the US pronunciation has been influenced by the Spanish pronunciation, which is the -KOLE- one.

I'm American, and I went to high school with a girl named Nichola. It was pronounced the way your mother pronounces it, so I don't think the Ni-KOLE-a pronunciation is universal in America.
