Re: Dick?

Honestly, I like the sound and I dig the old connotations--I see it and think "detective". If it wasn't slang for the ween (and more importantly to me, for what Wikipedia describes as "an abrasive and inconsiderate person"), I'd think it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, it is slang for those things, and so it's out. Woe.

There's a teacher at the other high school in my town...

Seriously. Well, it's Richard Head, but his nickname is Dick.

We have a substitute teacher at our school...
Who is named Mr. Head. When asked, he says his first name is Richard, but we don't know if he's joking or not.

I don't get why they don't just go by Rick, Rich or something. I'm not sure, but I assume that his name is Richard?
I don't get men like Dick Chaney, that are in politics or something. Why don't they change it? How can you meet a man named Dick and take him seriously?

In high school, the father of one of my friends was Dick Hard--. I thought nothing of it and I don't think any of the other kids did either. And you would think we would have, at that age. At some later point it occurred to me that the man might have a rather unfortunate name. But really it was just a passing thought....
If I were him I'd go by another nn.
I know a guy named Nick Scott Wood (say it fast) his parents didn't catch it.

you'd be surprised...
Or maybe not, to know how many men are named Richard Head. And who go by Dick.

Oh my...that poor man :(
I had an uncle
once, through a now-ended marriage, whose name was Dick Ball.
That's not quite as bad though.
Anyway yeah I don't see Dick as namey very much, I know a respectable old man who has Dick as an occasional nickname for Richard, and it always startles me and makes me cringe slightly to hear him addressed that way.

No way!
I have a professor, first name William, who has a brother, first name Richard. They go by Bill and Dick.
With last names they're Bill Ball and Dick Ball, the most unfortunately named pair of brothers I've ever seen.
Never figured there'd be another one out there. :-D

My Cousin...
My cousin's name is Harry Dix. Yeah. That's bad.

I was once reading...

Harry Pitts.

I thought you were going to say Dick van Dyke, but Dick Trickle is wore. Dick van Dyke is funny, but Dick Trickle is just gross.
Or Dick Van Dyke.
But yeah, Dick Trickle is pretty bad.

Once, watching a NASCAR race, somebody asked "Who is it drives the Viagra car?" (for non-NASCAR people, that just means, whose racecar is sponsored by Viagra) The correct answer was Mark Martin, but my husband blurted out "Dick Trickle, of course!" which completely brought the house down.
yuck. poor guy. nt .
:)
:)
haha I agree I really do like the sound but then a second after I think I like that name, I'm like oh right...
