Madeleine or Emmeline?
Beginning to feel quite uncomfortable and excited now!
Anyhow we have decided on Minnie for the baby if its a girl but am unsure of what formal name to give her. Orginally it had been Emmeline but i have always loved Madeleine and think i could get away with Minnie instead of Maddie. The reason i haven't metioned this before was due to the current situation of poor little Madeleine McCann.
Do you think it would be ok to use Madeleine at the moment?

I don't think there would be anything wrong with using Madeleine. I still think Emmeline "Minnie" is better though!

I much prefer Madeleine, with that being my favorite spelling. I don't understand the appeal of Emmeline...to me it just seems like parents are desperately seeking alternatives to the uber-popular Emma and Emily.

I definitely think Madeleine is usable. It's not like it's such an unusual name that it's tied to Madeleine McCann. I adore it said MAD-eh-line but hate MAD-eh-lyn. I prefer it to Emmeline but I do like Emmeline as well.

Madeleine is a lovely name...so much nicer than Emmeline imo. I'd personally choose it.

I much prefer Madeleine. I like that spellling the best. I'm just not fond of Emmeline at all.

Congratulations on being so close to the end. :) I love Minnie, especially with Bessie, and I think it's a terrific nn for Madeleine. What happened to Madeleine McCann is a tragedy, but I don't think that should stop you from using Madeleine if it's a name you deeply love. If you were considering Jon Benet, or some other one-person name, that would be a different story, but Madeleine is fine.FWIW, I prefer Madeleine to Emmeline, but both are cute.

I'm so excited about Bessie and Minnie :) You could get away with Minnie for Madeleine IMO if that's primarily what you're wondering, and I don't think Madeleine McCann should be a concern. However, I like Emmeline way more than Madeleine. I admit it's mainly because of popularity, but it's also vaguely whiny to me. My favorite Minnie names are Minerva and Wilhelmina, and I think Emmeline is much less of a stretch than Madeleine. However again: Minnie is way more distinctive and awesome than boring Maddie. So I guess I think you can't go wrong.Out of curiosity, have you decided on a middle name yet?

I don't the the McCann girl is a problem. Madeleine/Madalyn/Madeline etc are pretty popular names now. I think almost everyone would know a handful of other girls with the name that they would think of first before that little English girl. Both names are a little too popular for my taste. Emmeline I don't think is so popular itself but it's similar enough to the ubiquitous Emma and Emily that it still isn't really a stand-out in my mind.I do like the nn Minnie though. You don't see that much. I feel the nn comes a lot more naturally from Emmeline so I'd go with that. But if the tabloid child is your only barrier in using Madeleine instead, I'd go with that. Use what you love.

MadeleineI just cannot take the name Emmeline seriously. It's just too country and outdated for me.

aww i thik minnie is a really cute nn for a little girl. I love Madeline and i think it would be fine to use it even with the Madeline McCann situation. You should definatley use Madeline its really pretty and i dont like Emmeline because it sounds like Emma which i dont like.

I think either name would be a lovely choice for a name! You definately could pull off Minnie with Madeleine, and I quite like it, because Maddie is a bit overused for my tastes. Emmeline has always been one of my favorites though... But with all the Emmas and Emilies popping up all over the place... who knows? Anyway, Madeleine sounds good!

I wouldn't let poor Madeleine McCann get in the way of using a name you love.
I prefer Emmeline over Madeleine, as I'm sick to death about hearing about Maddies, whether they are Madeleine, Madelyn, Madison or whatever. Minnie would be a refreshing nn to it though.

As awful as the case is with Madeleine McCann, I don't think that should dissuade you from choosing it as a name for your daughter (seeing as it's always been a favourite of yours). Minnie is a cute nn for it, and yes, I think it would work quite well.Overall, I'd prefer Madeleine to Emmeline.
