Wasn't there a Gem doll back inthe early 90's or late 80's?
I like it spelled Jem!
I like it spelled Jem!
I like "Gem" as a nn for Gemma or spelled "Jem" as a nn for Jeremy.

nt.
Well it's the Danish word for "hide" as in the "Hide and seek" categorie, so I'm not liking it much.
But as some has said here, it could be a great nn for Gemma.

I like it, but prefer it as a nn for Gemma.
Immature and cutesy.
Nms, unless it's a nickname for Gemma.
I don't like it. I prefer Jem/Jemie as a nn for for Jemma or Jemina. Gem looks like it should be pronounced with a "g" sound. I dislike G's being subsituted for J's. They don't look appealing to me.
"Exciting adventure, fashion and fame
...once you're a Gem girl you're never the same."
That is a way outdated reference, and I tip my hat to anyone who remembers. It was Jem, though, not Gem, but the sound still triggers the same memories for me.
I don't care for Gem on its own, but I think Gemma / Jemma is great. Short and sweet, versatile, and less usual than the similar sounding Jenna or Emma.
ETA: I'll just link to what I'm talking about; I don't think anyone'll remember it. http://www.beyondjem.com/ or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20BZID081Vk

Haha, that's exactly what I thought of! I hadn't thought about Jem for quite some time. :)
Also, I prefer Gemma over Gem.

"Truly, truly, truly outrageous...."
I remember "Jem". I thought it was fabulous back in the day. I also love Gemma, but not the J spelling for some reason. Though the thought of her getting called Gem or Gemi (Jimmy) are a bit off-putting for me, that and getting mistaken for an Emma.

spunky, and cute, I prefer as a nn for Gemma though
Well, it makes sense as a nickname for Gemma, and I call my friend Gemma this sometimes, automatically. (I shorten nearly all names to the first syllable- Rachel is Rach, Stella is Stell, Zoe is Zo, and so on and so forth. I'm just incredibly lazy and don't want to say the whole name!)
As a full name, not so much. Way too precious, and no substance to it. I don't like it at all.

I prefer Gemma.
It's okay as an occasional nickname for Gemma, but I dislike it as a given name.
I prefer/love Jem for a boy as a nickname for James.
