I love this name. I'm seeing it more and more on polls so I think it's on the rise in popularity. In fact, I have two cousins (from different sides of my family) who have recently named a dd Maeve (one in England and the other in Ireland.) In addition, my sister almost named her dd Maeve (about 17 years ago in the U.S.)
Of course, we're Irish, so the coincidence is not that unlikely. But I still say the name is on the rise.
I've seen it spelled the Irish way, Maebh, but i doubt that's the direction you're moving in. I wouldn't change the Maeve spelling just for the sake of phonics. Maeve isn't that difficult a spelling. (I've only ever heard it pronounced "mave," BTW.)
