I really loathe it, its nny and its a really popular nn (as with Tim, Nick, Chris). I hate when people cut out the traditional name (Timothy, Nicholas, Christopher) and just use the nn.

I love Jonathan, and would rather see John as a nn for Jonathan. However, I would like even better for it to be Jonathan with no nn
