Bethany?

I like it, it's on my list though I wouldn't use it.
I love Bethany
I don't understand all the hate. I know 2 Bethany's and have great assoications with the name. One Bethany I know is an adult- she is gorgeous, classy, strong, down to earth, funny, driven, smart. A really great woman. The other Bethany I know is 15- she is sweet, bubbly, fun and just a great girl.
I think it is a sweet name that ages well and it is really pretty. It wouldn't ever be my first choice, but it is a name I would be willing to compromise on one day for a daughter.

I LOVE it. I have a friend named Bethany, also. Very athletic, very sweet. Great name!
Wow...
I am surprised that so many people dislike this name! It's not one of my favorites, but I like it. I've met one person named Bethany, and I have good associations with it from that. I also like that it's not as common as Elizabeth, and it's one of those names that to me sort of sounds like a nn but isn't. I like Beth as a short form as well.
Overall, although I wouldn't use Bethany myself (too many other names I like even more) I'd be delighted to see someone else use it. However, if you're set on trying to convince her to use something else (which obviously could run the risk of making her mad/annoyed), some alternatives that sound similar are Annabeth, Betony, and Beverly.

I don't hate it, but it just seems dated and cutesy to me. I've only met a few, and I actually have a good friend with the name, but I've just never cared for it. It doesn't help that my friend doesn't particularly like her name; she is almost 30, and therefore older than most of the Bethanys, I suppose, and says everyone always thought her name was Stephanie. :b
I despise it too. Maybe steer her towards Elizabeth, same nn...
I agree with you- it's an awful name. I prefer Elizabeth.
I despise it, as well. It's not even a person's name in the Bible (where it comes from). To me it's like naming your child Bethlehem or Nazareth.
