I love Frankie as a fn or nn on a girl, but I think you mean for boys. So I like Francis to go by Francis or Frankie. My impression is that it sounds a little weak by itself, but Francis Ford Coppola has no problem pulling it off - I love his name. I guess for a stereotype I would guess he's Italian, but I didn't think of that immediately, I had to think of a what a sterotype might be.

It doesn't sound very masculine to me, but again Robin Williams pulls it off fine.
