1. WDYT of it in general?
2. How do you pronounce it?
3. WDYT of it for a boy?
4. WDYT of it for a girl?I want to use the pronounciaton bay-zul (not bazul, since I never say it that way, and never have, lol), like the spice. I would like MN suggestions please, this is for a boy. :)ETA: also names from TV: a man named Flip, and a young girl named Anaconda/Anacanda.

I wouldn't be too upset about meeting a little boy named Basil, prn. BAY-zuhl, but I can't say I be thrilled about it on a girl, no matter how you prn. it. BUT, Basil (as in the spice) rhymes with Hazel, so I suppose it's not that far-fetched. And it could definitely be worse. :b BTW, I much prefer the BAZ-uhl pronunciation, for a boy, and with the nn Bas/Baz. :)

1. WDYT of it in general?
I like it and names related to it.2. How do you pronounce it?
BAZ-ul3. WDYT of it for a boy?
I love it, but wouldn't use it.4. WDYT of it for a girl?
Horrible, however, I like related feminine names like: Vasiliki / Basiliki / Basilike (Greek) / Vasilka (Bulgarian), Vasilissa / Baslissa (Greek) / Vasilisa (Russian), Vasylyna / Wasylyna (Ukrainian), Basilia (Greek), etc.

I love it for a boy, but really dislike it for a girl.I only like it pronounced "bazz-il" when used as a name.

1. I think it is a nice name, but only pronounced "BAZ-ul."
2. I pronounce it "BAZ-ul."
3. It is a nice classic sounding name for a boy.
4. For a girl it is absolutely terrible and hideous.Basil Alexander
Basil Gregory
Basil Edmund
Basil Cornelius
Basil Augustus
Basil Sebastian
Basil Robert

1. I love it, very cool.
2. ba-ZUL (ba like bat)
3. Very awesome
4. It's all boy.bay-zul is kind of cheesy, like Cinnamon or Saffron, but if that's your favorite pronounciation go for it.I like it with more well-established (or masculine) names:
Basil Henry
Basil Gregory
Basil Theodore
Basil Nathaniel
Basil Vincent
Basil Patrick
Basil Solomon (don't really know why I like that)

1. WDYT of it in general? A little old fashioned and stuffy
2. How do you pronounce it? Bay-zul. I have a great uncle named Basil, that's how he pronounces it.
3. WDYT of it for a boy? Okay
4. WDYT of it for a girl? Weird, I don't think of Bazil as unisex.

We have a nephew named Basile-French pronounciation, Bazz-eel. A nice name.
And, I always think of the Saint, not the herb!

1. WDYT of it in general? I dislike it. It sounds pompous and reminds me of Basil Brush.
2. How do you pronounce it? BAZ-il is how it's said over here. I've never heard the other pronunciation.
3. WDYT of it for a boy? See #1.
4. WDYT of it for a girl? Dreadful, I agree with Poppylena's comments.

1. I like it. It's not a favorite but I'd be happy to see it in RL. I like the nickname Bas / Baz, and that's saying something since there aren't a lot of nicknames that I particularly like.2. I pronounce the herb (not spice, to be nitpicky) BAY-zil, but the name BA-zil since it's primarily used as a name in Britain and that's the way it's pronounced there...BAY-zil as a name sounds very strange to me, and I don't like it.3. Great for a boy. Very British, and therefore matches well (in my head) with names like Oliver, Simon, Rupert, Nigel, Neville, Edmund, Percy, etc.4. Totally a boy's name to me. I don't like it for girls at all, and would go for Bryony or Betony instead (also plants, also with the B sound).
I like Flip as a nn for Philippa, but I wouldn't use it as a given name (or even a set nn) since it reminds me of both flippant and flip-flop. Anaconda as a name is terrible...like naming a child Python or Piranha. What's wrong with Amanda? All I can say is I hope there was a reason for the character having such a strange name.

Anaconda was a real girl sadly

It's ok for a boy, a bit reminiscent of an old British man. I don't know why you would want to use it for a girl, it's a male name. MNS could be:
Basil Mark
Basil Alexander
Basil Thomas
Flip is ok as a nn for Philip. As a full name, it's good only for a pet. Anaconda is horrible, it's a big snake, I do hope it's not her real name!

I like it
2. How do you pronounce it?
I pronounce it BAZ-il, like the herb (I've never seen/heard it as BAY-zul, my dictionary has the pronunciation BAZ-il).
3. WDYT of it for a boy?
I'm starting to love it for a boy.
4. WDYT of it for a girl?
It's not a girls' name, IMO, when used as a name it's either in reference to either the Arabic name or the English name coming from Greek. Neither of them are female names. That aside, why would you name a girl a name that counts (amongst others) Basil Fawlty and a fox puppet (Basil Brush) and a cartoon mouse (Basil the Great Mouse Detective) as famous bearers (not to mention a whole host of MALE historical figures).

Basil is the name of my ex boyfriend's bird, I think it sounds a bit silly for a child. I say it as baz-il. If I WAS going to use it it'd be for a boy. Flip and Anaconda aren't my style.
