I've never actually met someone named Carys, but it's fairly normal and acceptable. I honestly am not certain of the correct pronounciation, and my first guess would be CARE-ees (I'm pronouncing the last syllable completely different from the last syllable of carries, but I'm not exactly sure how to write it. I guess for me it kind of rhymes with lease or the -eese- in Reeses, if that makes any sense). It's quite pretty, and I don't think it would be made fun of at all.
