I like Alexander as a MN, but it is terribly boring with Robert. I'm on the fence about Robert as a name. Bob is entirely too cutesy as a NN, but Rob seems cocky and annoying to me, but Robert begs a NN. I prefer it without one, though. Robert Luther has a lot more character than Robert Alexander. I am friends with a Robert Lamar. (Or maybe it's Lamont? I don't remember, but he hates it haha.)

There was something about Rob I couldn't put my finger on, something I didn't like. So yeah, I totally agree on that. :)
About nn's, I have a cousin Robert who only goes by Robert. I've never heard him called anything else, so I could see it working without one, which I was planning on.

Hmm yes but you can't control what kids will get called at school etc, he could end up going by Rob and there will be nothing you can do about it. I worry about this with a lot of my favourite names!
