Alexa, IMO would be better as a nn for Alexandra.
Alexis is better as an independent name.
I LOVE Alexander/Alex on a boy.
Alexis is feminine, and I really don't think it's too childish. When you think about it, when the new generations are growing up they will all have [what we now consider modern] names. So, there will be plenty of Ashleys, Alexis's and Caitlin's.
I love Caitlin [I prefer Caitlyn, Katelyn or Kaitlyn.] You could always use the nn Cate or Catie, both which would age well.
