I love the name John. I was just thinking about it, actually. I don't find it boring or dated. To me, it is a very strong, classic name.
I personally wouldn't use John as a nn for Jonah. The sounds are too different, and John as a nn would seem forced. My favorite nn for John is Johnny but Jack isn't bad. I've always preferred Jack as a given first name rather than a nn, though.
John Alistair
John Avery
John Conrad
John Rayner
John Elias
John Corbin
John Roderick
John Edmond
John Everett
John Thaddeus
