Kirk.
I've been thinking about this name for a while, and now I really, really like it.
Opinions? I'd use a family name for the middle name. Though Kirk Cameron is a bit tempting. ;-)

It's my husband's name, so I'm partial to it. I'm sure he had his share of "Captain Kirk" teasing while growing up, but he likes the name: it's not common, one syllable, and has an abrupt, hard ending.
I can only think of Captain Kirk...sorry. I also find it really harsh and abrupt sounding.
I am sorry, but as a recent Gilmore Girls convert, all I can think of is Kirk from the Gilmore Girls which is not a good association!
I know that before I started watching the show, I still didn't like it as it always sounded so pompous and yuppie to me. All the Kirks I have ever met have been upper-north-shore Sydney, private school boys who are very arrogant.

I like it. It's fun, I find the Scottish church connection fascinating, and ditto on Cameron! :)

I've been aware of the name Kirk as a first name longer than as a surname, so it's not surnamy to me. It's a lot like Dirk - middle aged, but bold and bright enough to be used for a boy born now. The father of the family across the street from me is a Kirk, and the name suits him really well -- he's a laid back guy but high-energy, planting his yard in the rain and stuff.
I don't get why it would bother you for religious reasons. The surname probably just referred to someone living near a church.

I didn't realize that it was a surname. I thought it was a vocabulary transference name, which was why I was concerned.

Reminds me of...
Captain James Kirk, USS Enterprise
I like it as a last name or a middle name, but it's too short for my liking...

I get it. I'm an old bat and Kirk Cameron from Growing Pains immediately came to mind. (I would put a smiling emoticon, but I've lost all my teeth . . . . )
I've always loved the name Kirk. I'm in the U.S. and have parents from Ireland and England, but Scottish history / culture has always attracted me. Plus, as a linguist, the church / kirk / kirke connection is fascinating. (Other words of Norse / German origin hav ethe same k --> ch phenomenon, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.)
Wow, that was a long-winded way of saying, "I like the name Kirk."

LOL
I should have made myself clearer. I forgot out long ago Growing Pains was.

I posted about Kirk on the facts' board, your religious reasons are giving me thought as well.

Lol. Needless to say I have never seen Growing Pains! I'm dreadful at knowing the names of even better-known actors, though. I've rambled about the religion thing over on the Facts Board :-)
It's my daddy's name...
so I'm a bit partial. He's Duane Kirk but goes by Kirk. Kirk Cameron seems to have a little too many k sounds.

Duh! I didn't make the connection!

Kind of catchy...
I immediately think of the character "Kirk" from Gilmore Girls.
