Odds & Ends
In effort to conserve board space I've opted to make one all-encompassing post about all the name stuff swirling around in my head as opposed to four one- or two-sentence long posts.New Baby
My cousin had her first child, a son named Tristan Kane. (The spelling is unconfirmed.)Expected Baby
A couple who are acquaintances of mine are expecting their first child. The baby, a girl, is not due for several more months but they've already selected a name, Katherine Margaret nn Kate/Katie.Prospective Names for Expected Baby
Another acquaintance of mine is pregnant as well. For a son she and her husband have decided on Charles nn Charlie, her father's name. For a girl they're debating between Petra, a name her husband adores, and Quinlan, a family name they also considered for a son before agreeing on Charles.Name Nerd Mini-Rant
The other day I was reading an article about a woman who was born a man. She had chosen the name Julie for various reasons one of which was because it is "a feminine form of John," her birth name. What? Why would anyone think Julie and John are related? Because they both start with J? Can't you, article featuree, think of any male J name that resembles Julie more than John and vice versa?!

I thought you were going to say that he chose Julie because his birth name was Julian. But Julie is not related to John!I knew a very mean teacher in elementary school named Mr. Quinlan. I don't like it as a first name, but especially not for a girl!

New Baby
I really like the combo, though I don't think I like either name alone. Congrats to your cousins!Expected Baby
Katherine Margaret - I love it! Especially Kate/Katie. I really like Catherine nn Caitie.
Prospective Names for Expected Baby
Charles/Charlie, IMO is very cute and it grows with the boy.
Petra/Quinlan - Ehh, not really my style, but it's their decision of course!Name Nerd Mini-Rant
Wow, really .. Julie and John? Wonder where she got that idea.

Tristan Kane - This is nice. You never hear Tristan where I live (Scotland), so it still feels fresh to me. Kane is okay, could've been better. I think Tristan would benefit from a more substantial middle name.Katherine Margaret nn Kate / Katie - Uh, don't like this at all. Katherine is OK on its own - it's been so overdone that it needs to be kept as a middle name imo - but you can't pair it with Margaret. What a boring combo. ::Sigh::Charles nn Charlie - Extremely boring.
Petra - Nice. Not a favourite of mine, but I'd love to see it on a baby.
Quinlan - Okay, if trendy, for a male; no good for a female.Julie - Okay name - far prefer Julia. It quite obviously isn't a feminine form of John, though. If anything they could have chosen Joanna. Idiots!

Tristan is really nice. Not too keen on Kane, thoughKatherine Margaret is a very classy name, and the nn Kate spices it up. I'm sure she won't have any troubles because of her name! Well, I hope this couple will have a boy...Charles nn Charlie is great, but Petra and Quinlan are nmsaa. So Julie is a form of JOhn...go figure! And Danielle is probably a form of David, isn't it? Why is it that people believe just about everything they heard, read or see? Come on!

Tristan Kane
Tristan is my nephew's name. I think it's handsome & classy. I prefer this spelling. Kane does nothing for me though. It has a trendy, 90's feel & simply doesn't do Tristan justice imo.Katherine Margaret
This is simply gorgeous. katie is a cute nn.Charles, Petra & Quinlan
Charles is nice, but not really my style. I immediately think of Prince Charles.I love Petra especially because of the ancient city association. Petra has an exotic quality to it & it's not too popular. If you didn't point out that Quinlan is a family name I would regard it as trendy & made up. I am really tired of Quinn names - once again very 90's sounding.Julie & John
Julie: Julian
John: Jo-Ann/Joanna

Tristan Kane is such an adorable combo! Tristan is rather romantic and cute and Kane does a wonderful job of grounding it and giving it a strong sound. Love it & congrats to your cousin! :)Katherine Margaret nn Kate/Katie is a lovely combos though perhaps a bit lengthy or overly classic. It's sweet and Kate is one of my favorite nicknames though Katie is really popular. Charles nn Charlie is a really nice name and it's great that is honors her father. It cheers my heart to know that someone else loves Petra too! It's such a sweet name and it would work so well as a sister to Charles someday if they don't have a girl now. ;) Quinlan is also nice but I don't think it's really that great on a girl, on a boy it would be cute but I really like Charles much better. There's not even any foundation for thinking that Julie is a form of John, is there? That's rather ridiculous! Feminine forms of John are abundant (Johna, Johanna, Joanna, Joan, Jane, Jean, Jeanette, Janet, Gianna, Jenna, Jenny, Jessie, Shawna, Siobhan, even Asia according to this site!) so why Julie? Some people should check out this site before they go giving themselves a different name! ~Laurie :)

Tristan Kane is nice, a little bit trendy but at least not kre8yv.Katherine Margaret is all right but very dull.Charles is very nice and Charlie makes a friendly, good-natured kind of nn. I'm not crazy about Petra, it sounds like a cartoon or video game character, and I definitely don't like Quinlan, there's no strength to it.As for Julie, well, from what I've seen of transsexuals and transvestites, I'm not surprised this just decided the make Julie be a feminine form of John. They tend to always want to be the center of the universe, so assigning a name a meaning it doesn't have so that it suits her purposes is about what I might expect. Ruthless stereotyping, yes. Not true in all cases, sure. But that's the first thing came into my mind.

ruthless stereotyping. From what I've seen of lower-middle-class Midwestern US white women, I'm not surprised that's what you think. They tend to assume the worst about people who are unlike themselves, so assuming Julie was knowledgeable about name etymology because it suits your prejudices is about what I might expect. Ruthless stereotyping, yes. Not true in all cases, sure. But that's what came into my mind.- mirfak, with overweening faith in your sense of humor

I'm not offended...Seeing as how I am not white and no longer a Midwesterner.

I really like Petra. And for your last question all i can think of is Jude because it at least has the JU.

Hmmm I thought of Julius or Jules. Didn't even think of Jude.---------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually, I was asking the last question rhetorically. Hmmm, maybe I should fix that in the post...
