Re: Madelyn
in reply to a message by Vesta
Madelyn's not French, as others have pointed out. Madelyn's a modern English spelling variant of Madeline created to 1. reflect a(comparatively rare) alternate pronunciation of the English usage of Madeline, MAD-e-lin, and 2. cash in on the -lyn suffix trend for girls. The French form of Madeline is Madeleine or Madeline only.I actually like Madelyn, though. Certainly, it's much more substantial than Kaylyn or Jaylyn, and it seems like Madelyn's on its way to becoming a legit spelling variant like Carolyn or Elinor has. I also like Madeline (pr. mad-e-LIEN) and Madeleine (pr. ma-de-LEN). My personal favourite of the three is Madeline, though for others it all depends on the context which form I prefer.
