Even if the NN's are cute I think the formal names have connotations of being elderly, overweight, and homely.Leslie, lucky mommy to Scott (2000), Delaney (2002), and Larissa (2005)

I don't like any of these, however I love variations of Agnes like Agneta and Agnethe.

I dislike Bertha the English way, but bear-tah is nice to me. I dislike Gertrude, and like Agnes (ah-nyes).

I don't like Bertha at all. I do like Agnes and Gertrude. Trudy is cute, too.

I actually like Agnes but Bertha and Gertrude I have yet to warm up to. Gertrude is tolerable but Bertha still means "obese" in my head.

Bertha...I just can't see how that was ever popular. IT has "berth" in it, for pete's sake. It just screams FAT. Gertrude..the same. Anges I like, but I prefer Agatha.liza

Bertha only sounds ugly when pronounced in English. The spanish pronounciation sounds much better BEAR-ta, in fact I have an aunt named Bertha Sofía, pron. the Spanish (I'm hispanic) and my cousin would name her daughter Lisa Bertha in honour of her.
So it's only bad in English:)

The only one from those three that I even remotely like is Agnes. I agree that those names scream "old lady" to me.

Being a "bear," I like the French form "Berthe" (BEHR-t) :-D But Bertha, in English, is less than attractive, poor thing.Agnes has a medieval appeal to me. I wouldn't use it, but the nn Nessie is cute. I adore the variants Inez and Ines, BTW.Gertrude is a fun name because no one else likes it. The contrarian in me rebels. Besides, Gertie and Trudie are very cute. My dh had an Aunt Gertrude, so the name has a sentimental attachment for me.I know. I'm weird. I just find names like K8tlyn and Heydyn repellant. These names, in contrast, are refreshing.

I don't MIND these names, but I just don't like them because they seem "rusty" to me. There is nothing wrong with them (good meaning, nice associations, strong sound) I'm just biased because I think of old peopleAgnes is exempt from that description: I think its a usable, good name
