Where I live Calvin is said cAl-vAn so to me it is the same
True, but in my accent KEL and KAL are two distinct sounds. Similar, yes, but very distinct nonetheless.

Isn't "kelvin" a unit of heat in chemistry? (It's been quite a few years now so I could be off-base with this.) Even if it isn't, I'd keep to the standard spelling or headaches for the child will result.
