What do you think of these uncommon (I think?) nicknames?
Shirl (like shirt but with a l) for Shirley
Kimber (kim-bur) for Kimberley
Both on girls.

Shirl is the usual nickname for Shirley afiak - my Great-Aunt Shirley gets called Shirl by her sister (my grandmother, Adele).
Kimber is an ok nickname for Kimberley. I prefer Kim, with Kimmie as an option for when cutesy is required. My cousin Kymberley "Kym" gets called Kimba (I don't know if you had it in France, but in the 80s there was a kids' cartoon show featuring a white lion cub named Kimba, hence Kym's nickname) and also Kimbo, which is a very Australian-style nickname.

Kimber is an ok nickname for Kimberley. I prefer Kim, with Kimmie as an option for when cutesy is required. actually I prefer Kim and Lee or Shir even (even though I don't like it. Shirley is my best friends name. I know her sibs call her Shir or shew (but that's a whole different story, because her parents derived Shirley from her chinese name, Xueli) sometimes, but none of her friends do, we always call her Shirley in full.)
Shirl is kinda weird, like whirl or twirl, plus it's annoying to pronounce...
Although I prefer Kim, Kimber could work.

I knew a girl named Kimbr. I think her name looks incomplete, Kimber is better but I really dislike both.

Shirley is my mother's name, and I don't believe she's ever been called Shirl. And I agree it's a little hard to pronounce.
Kimber I've seen before (mostly as a full name, instead of just a nn) and I really dislike it. It reminds me of Amber, which I have always really disliked, or some cutesy/outdated trendy name along the lines of Ember or Tymber or somesuch. Blech.

I think Kimber is cute, but Shirl is hard for me to say, I don't know why.
